Note the direction of travel: OSA requirements that currently oblige platforms to proactively "protect" children from content will be extended to protect adults.

The government has today (8 September) announced urgent action to toughen the Online Safety Act by putting stricter legal requirements on tech companies to hunt down and remove material that encourages or assists serious self-harm, before it can destroy lives and tear families apart.

While platforms already have to take specific steps to protect children from this dangerous self-harm content, the government recognises that adults battling mental health challenges are equally at risk from exposure to material that could trigger a mental health crisis or worse.

Woke up to quite the update on this. I had been in contact with Payment Cloud about getting their service and they waited until now to hit me with the image below. Again, stringing me along instead of being upfront. They had seen my website multiple times before this.

An image taken from an e-mail from Payment Cloud to me. They list prohibited adult work, one of which just includes "Fantasy" which is as wide as cat ears and fairies. We are so cooked.

Online age verification is not like "showing ID to buy alcohol" because

a) the liquor store doesn't get to scan your ID and store a digital copy of it forever in a database that will inevitably get hacked

b) you don't have to show ID to go to the library because they have cocktail recipe books

UK Commissioner says that the 50% drop in traffic to Pornhub following the roll out of the Online Safety Act is a sign that "their mission is on target."

Would she say that if traffic to Twitter had dropped 50%? No, because we'd all agree that was government censorship

This isn't about kids.

Early signs give us both confidence that this mission is on target. Over 6,000 websites are now using age verification technology. Traffic to the biggest pornography sites dropped sharply in the days following the rule change and Ofcom acted quickly to begin enforcement action against sites not complying.
We accept that in a tech environment that innovates so rapidly, this is never job done. There needs to be a lot of flexibility in this so that we can adapt. But we will also need to be on our toes; as a government, as regulators, and as advocates for children.
