A lot of us will make the most we ever will if our books were recognized as stolen in the Anthropic lawsuit (which excluded a lot of books due to copyright registration.)

And it's a bit demoralizing to realize that's how our books suddenly have value...as fodder for a plagiarism machine.

You should be concerned about the rate of authors leaving publishing. Especially from marginalized communities. This year I have seen so many authors just pack it up and go. And it's only getting worse.

My TikTok account has started giving me really odd "suggested accounts" to follow. Instead of other authors and mystery writers, suddenly, it's all generals, guys with American flags in every image, and Elon Musk.

And so begins the demise of what used to be my favorite platform.

This is a terrific thread about the joy of creativity. My problem these days is that it is harder to find the joy and the flow seldom comes.

Recovering this is deeply important to me. It's one of the reasons I'm stepping back from marketing and promotion. Nothing else is as important.

I've said before how much I do not understand this attitude. I never hate writing. I hate when things get in-between me and writing. I hate when something about *me* is keeping the writing from working. But I never hate the work.

I've always been annoyed at the performative self-hatred a lot of artists/writers do of their own work. if you've followed me for a while, you've seen me counter-argue against it often. but I think now I want to impress it's praxis to talk about why creativity feels GOOD to do. because it does.

I can understand her decision, but I also realize I'm currently in a somewhat privileged position when I do this. I also understand that very few will be privileged in the end. I feel so helpless so trying to do the little I can is how I cope.
