Pinned skeet time.

Hi! I’m a tall queer guy who writes (mostly) shorter queer things, though novels keep happening somehow. Mostly I tell tales that exist somewhere in the Venn of spec-fic, romance, and YA, but always queer.

I’m a huge fan of chosen families and insistent queer history.
A panel I moderated at Nottignham’s Queer the Shelves. From left to right: C.J. Debarra, K.C. Lylark, Simon Smalley, Hope Newhouse and Thom Seddon (then me).

The issue is just funding and resources. That's it.

Really the same as in education.

You have to pay for it, and then it works wonderfully.

There are many problems in Ontario health care, but today I got a same-day urgent care slot for the kid, in our town (which has been recruiting doctors). We were in and out in 10 mins, prescription in hand, no thought about money or insurance for the visit of course. Things can work. (The kid is ok)

I heartily recommend cut-and-paste while doing this survey when it comes to sentiments you will wish to repeat multiple times (I found myself repeating "as it is based on theft and plagiarism, it has no place in academia, entertainment, or the arts" a few dozen times).

Someday, I will write an only-ensigns scenario for #StarTrekAdventures based on a space station and it will be called "Lower Docks."

(I’m sorry.)

It’s official! I can talk about it!

I’ve spent the last 2+ years leading the narrative for the Magic: the Gathering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set!

I’m excited to see all of this release! TMNT is such a weird, wild franchise that meshes weirdly well with Magic

As I recall it even saved an alien being that last time.

I mean, once you make time travel possible, it feels like a course on "the universe is not your private playground" seems valid.

Like that last conference where Dr. Mahar threw fists?

You know the entire Stellar Sciences department pulls out their scans of the Black Dwarf every now and then and just sighs, looking at the data longingly, then putting it back under the sealed envelope of "Temporal Prime Directive" and gritting their teeth every time someone calls them theoretical.

Also that one peer he had he, like, killed. (By request, but still.)
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Yup! I believe it a TNG Easter Egg and also saying "and eventually he made good" in the sense of "there’s always a second chance" kind of dealy.

In one of the #StarTrekAdventures 1e corebooks, one of the little fluff textboxes is Daystrom talking about that, and I always liked it.

The peer review process always kills it for him.

But I mean, "forcing Klingon-Federation peace for a while by making everything scalding hot if they have intent to harm each other" would probably count for consideration. Maybe even under physics or chemistry if not the politics of peace thing.

That’d be kind of a snarky half-snub, right?
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Okay, so we know it was still being awarded in Kirk’s era, because Daystrom got one (before he invented computers that killed people, oops).

If we’re talking VOY-era, Chakotay quips about earning one if he gets stranded in the past in an episode taking place in 1996, so… maybe?
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
…also I wonder how weird it is for actors who had small single-episode roles that were beloved by fans. Like, Scott MacDonald is one of the MVPs of Trek (N’Vek, Tosk, Rollins, Goran’Agar…) and it always struck me as sad he never got a multi-episode character.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Oh, boo.

I mean, with genuine gratitude for years of amazing curation of some wonderful writers, but it’s always sad for an exit.

With our new issue, we are making the sad announcement that this will be the final year for On Spec. See www.onspec.ca for details.

So, one of my favourite characters/things to write in my Voyager fanfic retelling is an ongoing relationship between these two.

I mean, it’s impossible, right? Rollins was born hundreds of years before Ducane, so that’s probably never getting a HEA, right?

*innocent whistle*
Actor Jay Carnes as Lieutenant Ducane from Star Trek: Voyager. Scott MacDonald as Ensign Rollins from Star Trek: Voyager.

Trans women are women. People still fail to understand 4 simple English words the whole bloody time.

Funny thing is, personally, that I didn't get diagnosed with what they called ADD in the 70s/80s. Teachers didn't spot it. They knew there was something going on, but that didn't occur to them. 1/2

To me, the whole “transition from…to…” narrative has always felt rooted in cisgender cope and ignorance

Trans+ people access Trans Healthcare to be themselves - that’s it - it's that simple

For true gender liberation, the “transition” framing needs to go

I don't identity as a woman

I’m still berating myself for things I did a decade ago (or, y’know, this year). I try to hold some grace there. One-offs vs patterns.

(And like OP said, this doesn’t fly for, y’know, big stuff. Like, when I’ve been folded into whisper networks about sex pests or the like, you bet I'll speak up.)
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
I try to be gentle when I think I’ve got someone who’ll react well to a "So, here’s a thing that happened…" that I think paints a larger picture, but sometimes you just sit there and nod and smile because, as OP said, it won’t fly.

Also we all fuck up. Maybe it *was* just a fuck up?
