The seventh grader and the fifth grader acquitted themselves honorably.

They’re also $201 short of their fundraising goal. Again, thank you to everyone for your support.

Now they get donuts.

We’re on our way this morning.

Thanks for your support of the NIJC!

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

And in an ode to the late Gordon Lightfoot, she titles that song “The Canadian Maleway Trilogy.”

wrt to that last repost, someone(s) put anti-ICE (and anti-trump) stickers all over light posts, utilities boxes, etc. in my neighborhood, and also tonight i saw a “hands off chicago” sign hanging in a window on a street where houses sell for a million dollars

It’s impossible to overstate how much “abolish ice” is the normie position now here in chicago — just countless random moms at toddler soccer on a park district field asking me where I bought my anti-ice t-shirt. average people don’t like our neighborhoods being terrorized.

A friend ran the Chicago marathon today and said he couldn’t count the number of FUCK ICE signs along the way.

I have been at cross country meets and softball games where Catholic school parents from the northside are wearing anti-ICE tee shirts.

I totally agree with you: This is a radicalizing event.

The most important news story in the country is happening in Chicago right now with the ongoing Trump deportation raids.

An example of that impact litigation:

NIJC has been really active in “know your rights” trainings during the recent immigration enforcement surge.

The organization has been active in impact litigation during this immigration enforcement surge as well.

For the last five years, our family has been helping a young brother and sister who fled Afghanistan during the US withdrawal. The NIJC secured asylee status for these folks, along with green cards and a work permit. All by coordinating pro-bono work with Big Law lawyers.

Along with the small humans, I’m running the NIJC 5k this week.

I’ve pitched the NIJC before, but this is an immigrant rights organization that we’ve supported for the last two decades. They do excellent work (examples below), and if you’ve been thinking about chipping in here’s your opportunity.

my father (a retired white engineer who has been in oklahoma for 40 years) is my weathervane for what normal people who just watch the news periodically think, and he was like “so, they want to call the guard out on a bunch of kids wearing frog suits? is that true?”, the admin is losing the PR war

I would love to see every single Post Office built during the 1930s. Particularly the ones with WPA murals in them…

What policy themed visitor trail would you do upon retirement? I would pilgrimage to visit the 100 Rishi Sunak outdoor chess sets around the country. I genuinely think it would be one of those fun random things that would take me to places I’d never otherwise go to

Chicago brings a Monstrance. Protests at the Broadview detention center began 19 years ago. Demoralized by our mistreatment of migrants, a Catholic immigration lawyer I know started praying there on Fridays. A month later he was joined by some Sisters of Mercy. They’ve been holding it down since.

For those not fluent in Catholic: refusing the Monstrance is not denying prisoners the Eucharist, it is refusing Christ himself, since Christ is present in the Monstrance.

If Portland’s blow up animals are the right language for Portland, this is the right language for Chicago.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Man, I’d love to know more from that incident. Because that’s bad news.

—>who live, work, and visit here. Chicago might be troubled by the existence of “Chicago,” but, by and large, it has had only minimal effects on our day-to-day life.

Trumpian hyperreality disturbs this because policy targeting “Chicago” is now actually being carried out in Chicago.
profhalloran.bsky.social
Tales from Hyperreality:

“Chicago” has always been distinct from Chicago. “Chicago” represents, in the conservative mind, violent dysfunction and Democratic mismanagement (among other things). “Chicago,” then, is a symbol that is wholly distinct from the Chicago that is experienced by folks—>

That was really, really egregious.

And it’s the kind of break that three or court teams consistently get when they’re in a close game that never seems to be available to anyone else.
