A thing that gets lost in the “WAS IT GOOD TO LEAVE TWITTER FOR BLUESKY?!?” debate is that, when talking just strictly about mechanics, Bluesky is a better platform.

Like, setting the ideological siloing conversation aside, it’s just built more like old Twitter.

Which was…much better.

Describe the opposite of The Free Press in a sentence
Screenshot of text:

It’s a business story. [Highlighting begins] Everyone in journalism has known for years that there’s been a huge opportunity for a publication that employs the traditional methods of U.S. journalism—reporting, deep sourcing, fact-checking, fearlessness—to subjects that either don’t get covered enough or get covered only from a certain perspective. [Highlighting ends] If creating such an enterprise seems simple

Anyone who says it’s a “badge of honor” to get ratioed is super mad they’re getting ratioed. Angry and humiliated. If you’re cool with the ratio just wear it. Let it ride. “Actually I’m happy you all think I’m an idiot!” Sure, Jan.

The Atlantic is maddening. Some really great writing, and also a whole lot of The Worst Most Entitled Most Delusional White Media-Class Pricks You’ve Ever Seen.

Super comfortable with Trumpism because it doesn’t affect them personally and it’s good for business

This is definitely the second-best heist film Queen Latifah ever made, I think I can say that honestly

Watching a bad 2008 movie because Diane Keaton is in it and HBO wisely moved it to the main page. Stephen Root and Queen Latifah and Ted Danson and Katie Holmes are also not hard to watch.

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

My man cannot even read. Our confusion of wealth with intelligence is literally going to kill us. Just smothered by rich-guy illiteracy.

Diane Keaton in her Manhattan apartment with Buster, an Abyssinian, photographed by Jill Krementz in 1977
black & white photograph of young Diane Keaton smiling and standing next to a white refrigerator in a barren-looking kitchen. her cat Buster is crouched on top of the fridge playing with/swatting her hair in the upper right hand corner. she's wearing a long skinny white scarf with a dot-grid pattern, a high-neck white blouse with an ascot/kerchief around the neck, and a black blazer/skirt or blazer dress over what looks like a vest

Heartbreaking reading, but this Reddit thread gives a sense of the relentlessness of the horror inflicted by ICE, and the damage being done to so many innocent people that doesn't make the news.

as per tradition, I am rereading my Notes app Tigers season diary today (you can see me get increasingly panicked as we choke away the division) and there is really no other sport with this emotional rhythm, baseball owns

- kyle finnegan is the most important man in my life (vierling
went on the IL)
- stop lining into double plays! stop!
- gleyber walkoff walk
- framber in hell (i miss this entire 6 run 1st inning picking up
my keys and then we only score 1 run the rest of game)
- Got BWJ to GIDP twice, we are winning the world series
- I KNEW IT WAS COMING but sacramento skubal start fml
