The staff of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the journal that reports on health trends and emerging infectious threats, was also laid off. The publication’s storied history includes a June 1981 report that five previously healthy gay men were treated for an unusual pneumonia — the first hint of the AIDS epidemic.

Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — the so-called “disease detectives” who respond to outbreaks around the globe — received layoff notices, according to a person familiar with them. The service was spared during an earlier round of layoffs in February.

There were/are many hacks enabling it on the sidelines--flogging a bunch of nonsensical narratives about universities, protests, 'the left,' transgender people, Black Lives Matter, anyone who opposes ICE or police killing defenseless people. I don't want to do anything to them but sheesh they suck.

How bad is it that I wear perfume. I have always worn perfume. I choose very light natural scents. I have worn perfume and makeup my entire life. My mother, my grandmother also—always, always. Not wearing it is like not wearing undies or something. Do I need to move to France now?

OMG I need this! For some reason WHITE is the fashion for middle school t-shirts and hoodies and my kid is fashion conscious. I miss the days when black was the cool color.

I'm going to start calling essays like this "odes to whiteness" because the underlying premise is that they are like this because they don't anticipate any social cost to smelling bad.

This one is v. frustrating because it tries to lump in perfumes with the broader (problematic) beauty industry

I’m turning 50 next year. I rarely wear deodorant anymore. Many women I know have stopped, too. We don’t talk about it, but I catch it in the air — a faint musk of onion, goat, curry, mustard, salt, sage, fennel, ozone, and the muddy wet marrow of the earth itself. I’m kind of obsessed with this collective stink: the animal symphony of skin, of women being women, punk and unfiltered, taking up space with their scent. Raw, unapologetic BO. The more I live among it, the more I see it not as a hygiene failure but as a radical act of self-acceptance. It’s not polite, but it’s honest — and that feels hot. Hotter, even, than anything a Guess ad ever promised.
