The editors of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) were apparently fired today.

The precursor to MMWR began in 1878 to address emerging public health threats rapidly.

We are not “great” without it. We are vulnerable to threats from sporadic foodborne illness to bioterrorism.

(Ironically, this situation is how I learned that the Reform movement considers anyone with a non-Jewish parent of any gender to be only provisionally Jewish--if you weren't active in Jewish life as a child, you're a goy, whereas Jews with two Jewish parents are Jews regardless. Sigh.)

One of the first things my ex-husband did upon leaving home at eighteen was go to a shul and ask how to convert. They helped him track down his mother, who he hadn't seen since he was two, and he discovered he'd been Jewish the whole time.

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.
