An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

@npr.org: About 1 in 100 children in the U.S. is born with a congenital heart defect. But for babies or young kids with the most serious ailments, there is no artificial heart specifically designed for them.

I have returned to the @latimes just to authorize a strike

(no, this is an old photo from when we went on our one-day strike last year!)

NEW: L.A. Times journalists just voted to authorize the newsroom’s first open-ended strike.

Eighty-five percent of the @latguild.bsky.social voted to support the strike. Just over 200 workers — 98% of members — took part in the historic vote.

An image of Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, twirling on an alpine meadow in a long Austrian skirt, next to an image of Christopher Plummer as Georg Von Trapp in the same movie, tearing a Nazi flag in half.

It's no worse than any other disabilities. But for years, it was billed as one of the most tragic outcomes possible for kids. It was seen as a symptom of schizophrenia or this condition that drove children into a catatonic state. The fact mothers were blamed for it made the stigma worse.

I don’t exactly how to phrase this, but like… is autism that bad???? Like, why is it such a source of fear??? Of course there are challenges but you can be autistic and have a rich, fulfilling life! Many people do! I don’t understand the preoccupation.

I have a thread, but this is the bottom line: bsky.app/profile/prim...

This is all to say -- ableism being endemic among "autism parents" is an entirely predictable result of the lousy, unsupportive and fatalistic way in which we inform parents about an autism diagnosis and steer them to resources. I don't think it has to be this way.

I wish we had a system where, when we identified that a kid was autistic, parents were not handed a report about their kid that ticked off all their supposed deficits. I wish we told parents, "Congratulations-- now you can better understand your kid. Welcome to a whole new world of human experience"
primateyell.bsky.social
And most parents do *not* get told to listen to autistic people. They get a kit from Autism Speaks that tells them to grieve for their child. (Yes, I got one and it gave me a nonstop panic attack that only subsided when I ... just spent time with my still-great kid)
primateyell.bsky.social
The hard part is that beyond the ableism, there is a legit struggle for many parents: our support systems for families are terrible. But that righteous anger should be directed at fixing the lousy systems, not bunk cures to "fix" kids who aren't broken
primateyell.bsky.social
I was very lucky that one of the first parents I turned to for advice told me to follow the #actuallyautistic hashtag and listen to autistic people. It changed my life and I hope it made me a better parent to my kid.
primateyell.bsky.social
It's very hard to find "parenting an autistic kid" spaces that are not driven by ableism. If you express that you really enjoy your autistic kid, you get a lot of people yelling at you that 1) your kid must be "high functioning" (terrible term but that's what they say or 2) you must be lying
amyhoy.bsky.social
it's bc so many "autism parents" hate their children for being disabled.

it's never driven by autistic adults. autistic adults grow to be, at best, wary of "autism parents"
primateyell.bsky.social
at this point even the antivaxxers have to be saying "look, you can't just say that random things cause autism"

Besides linking Tylenol in pregnant women to autism, RFK Jr. now says circumcision is part of the reason why kids are autistic.

"Children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, and it's highly likely because they're given Tylenol. None of this is positive..."
