Good lord. The MMWR is a hallmark of public health practice. Firing its editors will impact you and how your local health department functions.

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

I really want to see the paperwork for the RIF. I'm pretty sure they've furloughed the people who could have done the actual forms (this is the Feds - there are forms). So... I doubt this is a legal RIF?

This was more or less the plot of Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley.

For more than 20 years I relied on the MMWR for news every week on what was going on, disease-wise, around the country. You often got excellent blow-by-blows about disease outbreaks.

For some context the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report in addition to being just a good read, to quote wikipedia, "is the main vehicle for publishing public health information and recommendations that have been received by the CDC from state health departments. "

RIP MMWR.

I remember the first time I read it, while in college.

I've been kind of amazed it's been continuing to pop up in my inbox this year.

Journalists who live in the world of signal chats and off the record sources surely know better than to answer any of these questions ON PAPER especially "what's broken or substandard."
That one is a call to throw your colleagues under the bus.

I have tried to explain this to a physicist friend but he's certain biology is very simple and he has it all figured out.
evoneuro.bsky.social
As I tell my students, if you arrived at a simple answer in biology you have done one of two things: arrived at the wrong answer or asked the wrong question
clauswilke.com
Biology is much more complicated than most non-biologists can imagine. And AI is not going to change this anytime soon.

I'm feeling like if he doesn't win, the "cease fire" in Gaza will be over as soon as the Committee gives the prize to someone else. But it will be over in a few days even if he does win, so I'm definitely not advocating they give in to his financial terrorism.

I do hope it's Greta Thunberg.

@javajunco.bsky.social I couldn’t reply to your quilting question, PJ, but when I have fabric I love and don’t want to cut up, I use a pattern with big pieces. Dakota Sunrise by Missouri Star is my favourite for this and Three Layer Cake by Cozy Wuilt is also good.
Dakota Sunrise pattern made with Halloween fabrics. Squares and rectangles of fabric
separated by sashing and cornerstones. Fabric here has pumpkins, black and white gingham, and orange fabric with small black jack o’lanterns.

The apple harvest is underway in upstate NY. Reflective film is on the ground at many orchards to allow the apples to get extra sun. This can turn a warm day into a hot one for workers, as the sun’s rays are magnified and bounced onto the workers. #WeFeedYou

Since it resonated with the audience, I’ll recap my main argument against AGI here. ‘General intelligence’ is like phlogiston, or the aether. It’s an outmoded scientific concept that does not refer to anything real. Any explanatory work it did can be done better by a richer scientific frame. 1/3

This was a truly heartening day, with deeply thoughtful challenges to the dominant narrative framed around AGI, coming from across disciplines and perspectives. Felt like the tide might finally be turning a bit, at least among the scientific community. Thanks @royalsociety.org!

No protest from 6am to 9am in the Broadview free speech zone.

Just here with a handful of press waiting to see if we can catch the Texas National Guard arriving in Broadview tonight.

Ugh.
When my mother died (my dad's bad driving), he made my sister to drop out of college and keep house for him. She moved 3000 miles away. That left me to get up to speed on shopping, cooking, etc while finishing middle school & high school. He also kept crying and asking me to comfort him. Nope.
