I was reminded earlier today that I need to reconstruct my Twitter thread over here at some point on our backyard bird creek we made many years ago. Pinning this as point to start from whenever I can get to it. In the meantime, enjoy this fall Kinglet Pool Party. #birds

“Free” surveillance is a trap. Vendor trials, private donors, and federal grants hand police no‑cost tools that quietly build massive databases on all of us and feed ICE and DHS pipelines. Cities can and should refuse the bait. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
“Free” Surveillance Tech Still Comes at a High and Dangerous Cost
Surveillance technology vendors, federal agencies, and wealthy private donors have long helped provide local law enforcement “free” access to surveillance equipment that bypasses local oversight. The

Advocates worry about the financial incentives police get to help ICE: “The longer these agreements continue, the harder it is going to be for local law enforcement to unhook themselves from a relatively unlimited amount of federal cash,” says one.
Virginia’s New Governor Ends ICE Program. Local Contracts Remain, For Now.
Abigail Spanberger left the 287(g) program, which empowered state law enforcement to detain immigrants. Will Democrats also bar local police and sheriffs from the program?

This is something the Nazis used to do to Jewish children in the camps. It happened to a man I knew when he was a child in Auschwitz. The camp guards thought it was funny as hell.
On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.

Gamified online gambling seems much worse, & is becoming much more ubiquitous

It will immiserate so many
I see no reason not to look at the online gambling and prediction market craze as a new opioids crisis.

It will wreak havoc on lower-income Americans and leave a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.

My employer, Univ. Colorado will pay OpenAI $2M/year under the banner of “equity”. That’s 54 full scholarships / year. Plus, our IT will be able to read our chatGPT logs, and our chats can be requested under public records law. No thanks. Surveillance is not equity
