I was reminded earlier today that I need to reconstruct my Twitter thread over here at some point on our backyard bird creek we made many years ago. Pinning this as point to start from whenever I can get to it. In the meantime, enjoy this fall Kinglet Pool Party. #birds

Looking at texts people are getting from their AI "boyfriends" and "girlfriends" and thinking we have really let love letters down as a genre.

We need a national service program, not for "defense" but so that writers who live in NY, DC, or SF can feel a l
more secure about their masculinity. It doesn't need to be military service, we can put them to work cutting fire lines in the national forests, just get these guys a real job for a bit
There is a Kinda Guy that is absolutely gaga for Gruff-Aesthetic White Guy Who Says Kinda Lefty Things. Their love for this is *not* strategic or instrumental to some end, such a person is an object of intrinsic attraction to them, and a strong one at that. They will rationalise anything for this.
I also am baffled that people are assuming this super checkered barely known guy will be super progressive as though we're not living in a post Fetterman universe.

I'll add Docker Desktop's "AI" assistant, Gordon, as an additional data point.
Striking, isn’t it, that every AI assistant with a human name has a female one right up until they invent one that’s there to help you code, and it is Claude

FDA's decision not to accept Moderna's flu vaccine filing has sent shock waves through pharma. "When there’s uncertainty about the path to approval & the reliability of the process, that really has pretty serious consequences,” one player told @jasonmast.bsky.social. www.statnews.com/2026/02/12/f...
FDA’s rejection of Moderna threatens to stifle broader vaccine industry
Experts say the FDA "moved the goalposts" on Moderna, creating "a destructive precedent that will undermine the future of vaccine development" in the U.S.

Journalists—HALP!

Today at the National Postal Museum, I learned that newspapers were named after their means of distribution, with “the post” being “A POST” as in, “nailed to a giant stick.”

Which begs the question: was there an original Washington Post?

Not all health information is covered under HIPAA. HIPAA applies to protected health information as processed by *specific* groups (Covered Entities). Technology providers must comply to specific security requirements when they are bound, by contract, as a Business Associate.
So yeah, people goof.

But what's not a goof: Claude is not your therapist. Is not a therapist at all. Is not bound by HIPAA. Please do not tell Claude your business.

ICE is still active all across Minnesota, even parking at observers homes this morning. But we’ve been showing up all weekend with massive food drives, placing hearts where were abducted, at singing marches, and there’s another big protest at Jackson Square Park today at noon. Let’s keep showing up!

For Olympians and us regular people, hesitation is a fascinating tool. It’s our brains helping us time action just right. buff.ly/wPzQ8Zy
Hesitation is costly in sports but essential to life – neuroscientists identified its brain circuitry
There are specific parts of the brain that trigger hesitation in times of uncertainty.

It's nuts that these are the two candidates the respective wings of the Maine Dems have coughed up. I am positive there are, somewhere in the state, a moderate who's not 97 years old and a progressive who doesn't have nazi tattoos.

NEW: David Greene was the voice of NPR's "Morning Edition." Is he also secretly the voice of Google's popular AI podcast tool, NotebookLM?

Google says no. Greene thinks they're lying. My story today breaks the news of his lawsuit and compares the two voices. Listen for yourself: wapo.st/3ZHRvho
He spent decades perfecting his voice. Now he says Google stole it.
NPR’s David Greene says he was “completely freaked out” when he heard an AI voice that sounded just like his own, and he’s suing over it.

When all the female grad students tell you a candidate seems arrogant & smarmy & they don’t like him, but it’s all vibes, maybe hire one of the other candidates who are just as amazing researchers, but don’t give off bad vibes. Cuz in my experience those vibes have proven right 100% of the time.
That leads to another rule when hiring:

When trusted people around you get strong negative vibes, listen to them.

The people who thought like Elon also lost. Seems their “common culture” of white supremacy wasn’t enough.

1/3 What Musk is really referring to here is, of course “race” - that construct that served to define the hierarchies of wealth & power structured by modern colonialism. Like other far right racists though, he uses the word “culture” as a seemingly less pernicious synonym.
