A chat with @andyzax.bsky.social reminded me of a real late 1990s artifact, Vangelis's "Tegos Tapes," done for a Greek surgeon as background music for training videos because said surgeon figured just him talking would be boring as shit. 8 hours plus of spacelanes drift!

Huh: TikTok took down my 8-second video featuring this image of Debbie Brockman — the news producer just detained by Trump’s CBP agents — saying it violates the “joy of TikTok”

My guess is that it is a combination of pressures to publish in quantity (bean-counting much?) combine with field-level norms that set the MPU (minimum publishable unit) too small.

To solve that problem, rather than reaching for imagined "AI" as a band-aid, we could ask how it came to be.

The problem here seems to be publishing venues getting overrun with shoddy submissions.

Here's a rule of thumb: If "AI" seems like a good solution, you are probably both misjudging what the "AI" can do and misframing the problem.

Comment by Tom Diettrich on a linkedin post reading:

"You can't "test-in quality" in engineering; you can't "review-in quality" in research. We need incentives for people to do better research. Our system today assumes that 75% of submitted papers are low quality, and it is probably right (I'll bet it is higher). If this were a manufacturing organization, an 75% defect rate would result in bankruptcy.

Imagine a world in which you could have an AI system check the correctness/quality of your paper. If your paper passed that bar, then it could be published (say, on arXiv). Subsequent human review could assess its importance to the field.

In such a system, authors would be incentivized to satisfy the AI system. This will lead to searching for exploits in the AI system. A possible solution is to select the AI evaluator at random from a large pool and limit the number of permitted submissions. I imagine our colleagues in mechanism design can improve on this idea."

All over the world, one of the queerest things LGBT organizing and HIV/AIDS care has done in the last few decades has been to give queer and trans people access to dignified employment doing important work WITHOUT a college degree.

This is under attack by the US govt.

and don’t forget the allspice.

i personally use all those spices (sparingly because a little of each goes a VERY long way) in my candied yams glaze, and they are a HIT every time.

"Pumpkin spice" is just cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. It exists because it's such a warming and comforting combination that it can make PUMPKIN taste edible. What's not to like? You don't like feeling cozy?

The value of AI is that it gives every corporation in every industry an excuse to lay off workers and cut payroll expenses, which Wall Street then rewards by increasing its stock price.

That's why the ENTIRE corporate world is lining up behind a product/business model that simply does not work.

AI doesn't make money, it burns it. And unlike every other big tech innovation of our lifetime, it actually gets LESS profitable as it scales larger and larger.

It's the opposite of a viable business model.

All that money being poured into AI somehow tells me there's no money in AI lol
