This is like the bizarre discourse on heat pumps I see now and then from the US and UK. They talk about it like it's new and unproven technology, when it's been ubiquitous here in the Nordics since the early 1990s.

Seeing these posts about people turning their heating on is a another reminder that home heating tech we take for granted in the Nordics is apparently sci-fi in other parts of the world. My heating system is 15 years old, but still perfectly capable of managing everything automatically.

Shocked* to discover a massive overlap in the Victorian Parliamentary inquiry into dangerous religious cults and members of the state Liberal party
ausrationalist.bsky.social
The Guardian reports that the sister of Victorian Liberal MP Renee Heath has, at an inquiry into cults and organised fringe groups, described their father’s church as a “cult” and said so-called “gay conversion” practices may still be occurring in the state.

Commissioner Michael O'Flaherty adds: 'I observe a tendency to see the human rights of different groups as a zero-sum game. This has contributed to narratives which build on prejudice against trans people and portray upholding their human rights as a de facto threat to the rights of others.’

The obvious was ignored, the cheap dismissed, and only the expensive and the expedient could be countenanced.

Oh, and our level of preparation now?

Pff.

If they looked at it macro they’d have to acknowledge that we had deliberately diminished our ability to cope with a pandemic to cut costs, then denied the evidence around masking and air flow, and sequentially prioritised economic gains over life and so lost both.

It was an entirely predictable stupidity, one of many which massively increased the number of our dead. Johnson will face no consequence, because the bad choices of leaders never do, but I will always believe he should.

Mech suits for whales so they could come on land and fully express their feelings about humans. Especially orcas.

I guess that makes me the crazed villain?

lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

grateful portland has risen to the challenge so far in peacefully protesting the ICE facility and that nationally we're all cheering on the frogs but I think it's important to make sure everyone is aware that the ICE goons aren't exactly being peaceful in return

A very nice appreciation of Chaosium founder Greg Stafford, who passed away 7 years ago this month, but whose influence rates him as "one of the best modern fantasists, worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Moorcock, Leiber, McCaffrey, Martin, and others." open.substack.com/pub/someanci...

Kinnock is one of the finest proponents of progressive thought in this country and the best prime minister we never had.

In 2010, an interviewer told Neil Kinnock that the Labour Party "never used to understand aspiration".

Kinnock gave an absolutely brilliant answer that should be learned by heart by every Labour MP. (0.42 to 1.22)

Cool chart, turns out that “when the sun doesn’t shine” not so important already in California
Cool graphic of California elec supply (and storage charging) over 24-hour periods. Solar supplies majority during daylight but storage then provides a sizeable chunk for first few hours of evening.

History brains trust: does anyone know if flight logs exist for Mascot Airport in the 1930s, and if so where they are? I know that a plane landed there at 7:52pm on Tuesday, 7 November 1933 and I want to see if I can confirm the name of the pilot.

They're right, obvs. The tax system is an insane byzantine riddle, Labour's polling is at the earth's core, tax rises are inevitable, the government is aimless, & growth is being harmed by the need for perpetual mini tax hikes. Might as well do something daring which history will recognise you for.
