Am 21. März 2024 veröffentlichte die französisch-israelische Soziologin Eva
Illouz einen Essay in der englischsprachigen Ausgabe der israelischen Ta
geszeitung Haaretz, in dem sie begründete, warum sich die globale Linke
von der durch Gendertheorie bekanntgewordenen, sich in den vergange
nen Jahren aber hautsächlich mit moralphilosophischen Fragen beschäfti
genden Judith Butler distanzieren und lossagen sollte (Illouz 2024).1 Diesen
Ausführungen vorangegangenen waren mehrere Auslassungen Butlers nach
dem Massaker vom 7. Oktober 2023, bei denen sie die antisemitischen
und misogynen Terroristen der Hamas als Vertreter einer Widerstandsbe
wegung bezeichnet hatte. Unmittelbarer Anlass für Illouz‘ Reaktion war
ein von mehreren antizionistischen Gruppen organisierter und am 5. März
2024 in Pantin bei Paris gehaltener Vortrag, in dem Butler nicht nur erneut
dem Vorgehen der Hamas absprach, antisemitischer Terror zu sein und
ihn vielmehr als einen „Akt des bewaffneten Widerstands“ charakterisierte,
sondern in dem sie auch die am 7. Oktober begangene sexuelle Gewalt in
Zweifel zog. Sie werde die Behauptungen über die Vergewaltigungen israe
lischer Frauen glauben, sagte Butler, während sie in einer skeptischen Gri
masse ihr Gesicht verzog, wenn ihr Dokumentationen dieser Verbrechen
vorgelegt würden. Es sei kein Verbrechen, solche Beweise zu fordern (Paro
les D’Honneur 2024), brachte sie das Standardargument der Leugner von
und Zweifler an den Taten der Hamas vor, die erklären, solange es keine
Bild- oder Filmbelege beziehungsweise öffentlich unter ihrem Klarnamen
auftretende direkte Zeuginnen gebe, solange seien die Vergewaltigungen
und sonstigen sexuellen Gewalttaten nicht belegt, und man könne nicht

sicher sein, ob es sich dabei nicht bloß um israelische Propaganda zum
Zweck der Kriegsführung gegen die Palästinenser handle. Dass viele der
von der Hamas Vergewaltigten nach der Tat ermordet worden waren,
weswegen es wenige unmittelbare Zeuginnen gibt und die israelischen
Behörden bei ihren Ermittlungen vor große Schwierigkeiten gestellt waren
beziehungsweise aus Opferschutz die Namen der Betroffenen nicht öffent
lich machten, nutzen die Feinde des jüdischen Staates, um Zweifel zu säen
oder die Verbrechen der Hamas und der anderen Terrorgruppen gleich
ganz zu leugnen.
Judith Butlers jüngste Äußerungen über die Hamas und die grausam
ermordeten israelischen Frauen erinnern uns daran, dass auch Intellek
tuelle Kurpfuscher und Hochstapler sein können, […] weil ihre Worte
eine kleine Täuschung mit einer anderen verdecken, sodass am Ende
eine Halbwahrheit ein ganzes Lügengebäude stützt und nährt, (Illouz
2024)
schrieb Illouz in ihrer Antwort auf die Ausführungen der sich in die
Front der Vergewaltigungsleugner einreihenden Judith Butler. Nachdem
der Feminismus mehr als ein Jahrhundert darum gekämpft habe, „dass
die Stimmen der Frauen gehört werden – und dass ihnen geglaubt wird“,
fordere nun eine „Ikone der Queer-Bewegung“, die „ihre Kariere darauf
aufgebaut hat, Begriffe wie Objektivität, Essentialität und Wirklichkeit in
Frage zu stellen“, plötzlich „eine Mega-Objektivität, einen Mega-Beweis,
eine Objektivität jenseits der verfügbaren Rekonstruktionen, Bilder, Videos
und forensischen Analysen“, um ihre Skepsis aus der Welt zu räumen.
Butlers Positionen nach dem 7. Oktober röchen
nach einer neuen Art von Leugnung. Die bekannteste politische Praxis
der Leugnung zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie Zweifel an der Zahl
der Opfer des Holocaust, an der Wahrhaftigkeit der Massaker und an
der Schuld der Täter bedient. Butler bedient sich ähnlicher Muster. Sie
sät Zweifel an der von Frauen erlittenen Gewalt und an der moralischen
Bewertung der Massaker: Die Täter werden entlast…

„Aufstand aus einer Position der Unterdrückung heraus und gegen einen
gewalttätigen Staatsapparat“. Man könne „verschiedene Ansichten über die
Hamas als eine politische Partei“ sowie „verschiedene Ansichten über be
waffneten Widerstand“ haben, sagte Butler in besagtem Vortrag, sie denke
jedoch, es sei „ehrlicher und historisch korrekter zu sagen, dass der Auf
stand vom 7. Oktober ein Akt des bewaffneten Widerstands war.“2 Weder
terroristisch noch antisemitisch sei der Angriff gewesen, und auch wenn
sie selbst den Angriff auf Israelis „nicht gemocht“ habe, so wäre es „doch
sehr töricht“ zu sagen, die einzige Gewalt in dem Zusammenhang sei die
Gewalt gegen Israel gewesen: „Die Gewalt gegen Palästinenser findet seit
Jahrzehnten statt.“ Angesichts dessen könne man „für oder gegen bewaffne
ten Widerstand“, „für oder gegen die Hamas“ sein, aber man müsse die
Taten des 7. Oktobers „zumindest bewaffneten Widerstand nennen. Und
dann können wir eine Debatte führen, ob wir denken, dass es richtig war,
oder ob sie das Richtige getan haben, oder ob eine andere Strategie …“,
meinte Butler, bevor sie von Applaus unterbrochen wurde. Die „Ikone der
Queer-Bewegung“ (Illouz) erklärte also ernsthaft, eine Diskussion darüber,
ob das Abschlachten israelischer Kibbuzniks und Musikfestivalbesucher
die richtige oder dann vielleicht doch etwas überzogene Strategie der Pa
lästinenser sei, wäre notwendig oder auch nur wünschenswert – und die
Bezeichnung der Hamas-Taten als Terrorismus würde eine „offene Debat
te“ verhindern und verunmöglichen. Bezeichne man hingegen im Dienste
einer solch notwendigen Diskussion das Hamas-Massaker als bewaffneten
Widerstand, klagte die sich notorisch missverstanden Fühlende, werde
man „unverzüglich“ als jemand gehandelt, der für bewaffneten Widerstand
im Allgemeinen und für die im speziellen Fall verfolgten Praktiken sei,
während man doch bloß ungehindert und offen über die verschiedenen
Taktiken debattieren wolle (Paroles D’Honneur 2024, Übers. d. Verf.).
