the number of times I've seen Canadians give land acknowledgements at tech conferences and then immediately launch into discussions about "Canadian digital sovereignty" that completely excludes any concept of Indigenous rights or even us as Peoples at all. It's absurd, I can't wrap my head around it

base rate fallacy is a journalism smh
theautistech.bsky.social
If an article tells you the chance of X is doubles or increased/decreased by a %, BUT DOES'T TELL YOU THE BASE CHANCE, it's propaganda.

Doubling a 1% chance is significant. Doubling a 0.001% chance is...less.

By not listing the base chance, it sounds much better or much worse than it likely is.
theautistech.bsky.social
Double your pulls in a Gacha game? If you had a 1/3500 chance of pulling your waifu, double pulls aren't going to help much, but it triggers that part of your brain that makes you want to do more.

It's all propaganda, made to make you fear something, or want more of something.
theautistech.bsky.social
This applies outside of articles or news reports, too.

Even if you have the base chance and calculate things, it doesn't tell the whole story.

Would you like to live in a building hit by lightning a thousand times more often than a suburban house is? Doesn't sound good. But lightning rods exist.

I truly do not understand how things more tame than the Sears Catalogue swimsuit section are hidden behind "adult content," yet actual, easily identified, hate speech is protected to the point of platforms banning those pointing out the platforms' complicity.
theautistech.bsky.social
I have noticed that as tech has become more US centric, community standards have become more puritan. Things I would have routinely seen on TV in US prime time shows in the 80's are now "adult content."

Things I would have seen on teen shows in Canada have been such for a while.

Seriously.

Even if you occasionally unmask for family dinners and such (I hate social obligations), they make a HUGE difference.

I've been masking fairly consistently and I get sick so rarely now. Plus, my allergies are better.

They're not just good against COVID, but anything airborne.
broadwaybabyto.bsky.social
It’s not too late to wear a mask.

It’s not too late to protect your health.

It’s not too late to show you care about the health of those around you.

It’s not too late to do your part to make public spaces inclusive & accessible.

It’s radical kindness & community care.

Thread: I feel this in my bones. Too often over the past decades, we have, as a culture decided to see exactly those things that make up civilization and society as burdens to be borne, and that has cost us dearly.
figgityfigs.bsky.social
I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

Sex ed for Autistic people usually emphasizes compliance with neurotypical expectations, not self-advocacy—which pains me, as a survivor.

Seeing a lot of "wow they voted against their own interests!"

Alas, they really didn't. Most US farmers are millionaires now- it's not the same farm country your grandparents left.

Most US farmers are just... rich people who voted for tax breaks.

“Perhaps it is more illuminating to ask: is Alberta an actual province, or just a company town? The oil patch has intruded so far into Albertan institutions it is difficult to discern where private interests end, and public government begins.”

We are one week closer to the release of OMENS OF CHAOS, and the glorious return of Magic the Gathering long-form fiction!
A book cover against a blue background reading COMING FEBRUARY 17, 2026. The book cover shows a blonde-haired human New Capenna shield mage in the robes of a first year Strixhaven mage-scholar, casting a domed shield around herself. The school is behind her. I am legitimately so excited about this. A book by an amazing author, seemingly wonderful human about a magic school that feels actually exciting to read about ❤️

Please. Back up, archive, share, lend your Canadian media. It may be problematic. It may be lies. It may "just" be a catchy pop song used on the opening of a silly cartoon.

But it helps us frame things. It shows who we were, and thus shows who we are.

Because we're losing all of that.
