Not all games are meant to do this. And that’s fine. Games can be any number of things. But there’s a lot of agreement that books and films and music and paintings don’t NEED to be fun to be worthwhile, but then people disagree when applied to games. I don’t get that.

Sure, UNDERTALE is quite fun, but the fun is in service to a message about how morality in games seldom matches morality in the real world. Or to put it in less pearl-clutching terms: There is a disconnect between how we view games and how we view reality. UNDERTALE blurs that line.

My personal favorite moment in gaming is when UNDERTALE crashes and rewrites your save with Flowey’s info. And then after beating the game, proceeds to beg you not to replay it. It really sends a message about the implications of a world with video-game mechanics as laws of physics.

However, the fact that to many people, video games as a medium are supposed to be fun first and say something poignant second undermines the sentiment that games are art. As a gamer, and game composer, I believe video games are capable of things much bigger then just fun.

Had a very close friend point out how a lot of gamers are philistines and honestly, I agree.

In their words: “The amount of gamers that only appreciate games when they’re fun prevents them from seeing games as art. This isn’t to say games SHOULDN’T be fun. Art can be, and often is, fun!”
