This is why immigrants should never vote for CONS, they do not care about you, if they had their way, there would be very little immigration--using republican talking points #Canada

The Conservatives want to restrict birthright citizenship in Canada, a measure they say would mirror the rules in peer countries.

This might be the worst ICE video yet, because it’s literally random dudes hanging around, and then a bunch of heavily armed thugs running them down completely out of nowhere, because they’re brown. It’s a nightmare that would have seemed excessive in Jim Crow. Everyone in America should see this.

ICE is not only chasing down every random brown person in Chicago, they have a cameraman following them to film this for social media. Cruelty and inhumanity as content.

Frankly, everything pre-Trump in my mind has a warm nostalgic halo around it, even stuff which in retrospect is darkly foreshadowing.

The recent rise of “shadow federalism” — groups of states replacing federal agencies abdicated or destroyed by Trump — combined with the president’s military targeting of those states makes an American schism a medium-term possibility for which we should plan

Opinion: United States may split into warring federal entities. Let’s side with the better one
Recent developments contain the seeds of a United States divided into two competing federalisms – and even a potential civil war

I continue to think that one of the reasons this country is falling apart is the wholesale abandonment of public virtue as a broadly shared aspiration. Or even something people should be embarrassed about if they don’t have it.

Over 40% of Americans approve of a President threatening civil war over his fantasy version of his opponents. As a journalist I still feel some obligation to try to understand. As a human I want to stay as far away as possible, and don't know if I'll ever bring my family across the border again.

Prayer groups, book clubs, scavenger hunts, pub nights, debating clubs, knitting circles, park hangs, roller disco nights, bike trips, hiking groups, run clubs, etc.

There is absolutely no reason why politicians and civil society leaders can't be organizing these events.

CHOTINER: This game you like to play, what's it called?

ME: Slay the Spire.

CHOTINER: And you play it on the computer?

ME: Yeah. Well, I also have it on my phone. I played another 300 hours.

CHOTINER: And these other games in your Steam library. Have you finished them?

ME: Now hold on a second,

One thing I wish Americans would appreciate more is just how many apartments are being built in Canada

Construction has doubled since 2018, and Canada now spends 2x as much on new multifamily housing as single-family housing. (ratio is 3:1 in the opposite direction for the US)

TikTok served me a video from someone who earnestly seems to believe the biblical rapture is happening on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Checking hashtags, she’s not the only one. This shit always freaks me out. You never know what people will do when they think it’s the end.

Where has all the leadership gone? If not for university presidents, law firm managing partners, and corporate chief executives standing up against bullies, who then will step up for the first amendment? The
"suspending indefinitely" of Jimmy Kimmel immediately after the Chairman of the FCC's aggressive yet hollow threatening of the Disney Company is yet another example of out-of-control intimidation. Maybe the Constitution should have said, "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, except in one's political or financial self-interest." By-the-way, for the record, this ex-CEO finds Jimmy Kimmel very talented and funny.

One takeaway for Canadians watching what’s happening in the United States right now is that we need to put more pressure on governments / parties to strengthen democratic institutions and the fourth estate

You can also defend democracy by supporting the work of journalists and civil society groups
