I have nothing but contempt for people who go anonymous to trash a former colleague.
The phrase "given anonymity to speak candidly" also grinds my gears; you're not being "candid" if you're being a catty little asshole anonymously.

One of the worst things about Politico is its anonymous sourcing that lets unidentified people take cheap, personal potshots. Not defending Karine Jean-Pierre, just saying that good journalists don‘t allow this. And news flash: It’s possible to “speak with candor” and be identified at the same time.
