Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Failure to strictly regulate ICE in its primarily civil administrative purposes has allowed the government to treat them as nearly unregulated federal police with few guardrails. What you get from that is failed cops who want to stomp brown people. It is an insane amount of power for any police.

ICE agents should not have the authority to arrest individuals except in narrow circumstances, and never a citizen, and any effort to imbue them with general police authority should be reformed and stripped. They serve civil, administrative proceedings, primarily. Limit them accordingly.

And I have yet to see *any* intrepid investigative journalists pose the simple question: in this case caught on video, are we *sure* these were ICE employees that detained and loaded into a minivan a woman we see here? If we are sure, how are we sure?

As an attorney that has represented ICE, I *promise* you that if you were to take a video of khaki-wearing dudes in black tees and masks, with online-buyable police vests, taking people into non-government vans, and show it to ICE officials, they wouldn’t know if they were ICE or just vigilantes.

RESULT: New Orleans has a new mayor. Helena Moreno, a Democrat known as a progressive member of the city council, easily won today’s mayoral race and cleared the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff. She’ll replace the retiring Democratic Mayor, Cantrell.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

ICE abducted a 15-year-old autistic boy during a bathroom break and kept him hidden for nearly a week.
His mother thought he was missing. Even local police couldn’t find him because ICE never told anyone they had him.

He was selling fruit with his mom when he asked to use the restroom.
