when the history of this era is written, the TikTok ban saga will rightly be held up as an example of how thoroughly rotten our entire political system and civil society became in the mid-to-late Trump era, because there is simply no other way to explain it

—the executive thinks it can simply suspend statutes it disagrees with
—the legislature makes very dumb laws over the objections of ~everyone, immediately regrets them, but has no stomach for either repealing them or making the executive enforce them
—civil society accepts all this as normal

bondi sent the general counsels of several companies, each of which was either bribing (or) being extorted from by the white house at the time, a letter explicitly stating that the wh and congress were both stupid and corrupt and the written law was meaningless. this was accepted as true.

I kinda think it's just the opposite, actually—he got into it for the money, but once he had more money than he could launder and/or spend, he kept going for the sheer accumulative thrill of it.
