GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan shared that groceries are becoming a hotter topic for fundraising. "In some cases, very sadly, that is happening," he told Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi. "We're seeing it more and more."

Yup, and our failing health system makes people desperate for a low cost cure jump at the quackery. Many cancer patients try them while neglecting starting science based options, and by the time they give up on the quack, their disease has greatly progressed. skepticalinquirer.org/2025/08/from...

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

REPORTER: We know the president moved forward with mass layoffs. We're also learning there were significant cuts to staff at special education services. Are you comfortable with those cuts?

I think the counter argument to “Ellison and Weiss will turn CBS News into an unstoppable propaganda machine” is Bezos’s WaPo which lost basically all the talent and also is in a subscription death spiral

Ew. Just, ew.

Hi Sally. When Weiss published a supposed expose on the death of George Floyd, a veteran criminal justice reporter showed in deep detail that the piece was not just wrong but filled with falsehoods and misrepresentations. Weiss did not retract the piece. What do you think of that?

This is really smart. Amazed at the hysteria over the ascendance of a woman entrepreneur who clearly knows how to cover and sell news and who's not afraid to take on a mob. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

We’re doubling down on failed paradigms of the past that allow the worst actors in our society to treat our commons as an open sewer & export all of their externalities & risk onto us, while they privatize their rents & profits.

The rest of the world is leapfrogging over us to an electric future.

Americans have no idea how many of our innovations that actually made America great were based on early research funded by the government. It’s now all been gutted, and our children are about to experience being 2nd or 3rd or 4th to China.

Look, let’s be real, Biden did experience real cognitive decline while in office and his “Politburo” of aides DID cover it up.

The stable of possible candidates that MIGHT have run had he stepped down didn’t for fear of political retaliation (“I didn’t wana get my head chopped off…”)

A new order from the MAGA Dept of Education will require that, in order to have an ideologically balanced curriculum, the University of Houston also needs to offer a course on “Celebrating Oppression and Injustice.”
alandettlaff.com
Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

X is now just a parallel universe for insufferable hustle culture con artists of every stripe and flavor.

That place really crashed and burned soooo hard.

The only people who seriously use it to inform “policy” are people who want to live in that alternate universe in the real world.

MMWR published a report in 1981 about five men with unusual cases of pneumonia in Los Angeles. In retrospect, it was the first publication to detect and inform the wider scientific community of the presence of HIV.

Last night, everyone working on MMWR was fired.

It answers the question "how ought militaries act when civilian leaders turn on democratic institutions?"

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

No institutional design can overcome a lawbreaking president, a Congress defending lawbreaking and forfeiting its own power, a Supreme Court that pretends legal text doesn’t count to facilitate lawbreaking, and a citizenry that votes for all that.
Need at least one that wants rule of law. Maybe two.

Could you imagine the hilariously dark fate that befell the countless people who tried to do just that?

This is the problem from having enough wealth that it insulates them from being a part of normal society.

Nobody is around to call them out.
