Dooring crashes are a nightmare for cyclists, especially in cities. In Berlin, an actress recently lost her life after hitting a van door. Such tragedies are preventable, drivers should use the DutchReach. Driving schools must teach this simple, life-saving habit. 👇

The newly renovated main bus station in Linz is a huge step up: brighter, cleaner, now with a dedicated bike lane 🫶🚲🚐. A clear win for commuters. Unfortunately, the design includes hostile architecture aimed at deterring homeless people, a disappointing contrast to the otherwise positive upgrade.

Happy #BicycleBirthday, John Lennon!

October 9 (1940-1980)
Photo of John Lennon standing astride a bicycle in a meadow. "As a kid I had a dream - I wanted to own my own bicycle. When I got the bike I must have been the happiest boy in Liverpool, maybe the world. I lived for that bike. Most kids left their bike in the backyard at night. Not me. The first night I even kept it in my bed!"

By me this week - the happiest thing I've got to report of late, with a glorious trip over the summer to Montreal

I always find it amusing when people complain that vegan food is “ultra-processed and unhealthy” while tossing ultra-cheap supermarket sausages into their carts.

Agreed. The entire point of bike lanes and paths is to separate smaller, slower moving things from larger, faster moving things. Anything other than pedal-assist bicycles or other speed limited mobility devices should not be in these spaces.

My unpopular urbanist opinion is that big, hyperfast two-wheelers are a menace and should be banned from bike lanes/paths (with enforcement).

These things endanger everyone riding a bike or legal e-bike. Worse, they deter some from even trying.
E-bikes have evolved into e-motorcycles. Law enforcement is lagging behind.
Serious injuries are on the rise in emergency rooms around the country, as electric cycles become bigger and faster. Lawmakers and police departments are scrambling to address the problem.

I'm dreading the prospect of having to change my name everywhere: my passport, bank account, insurance papers, doorbell, driving licence, kids, social media handles and tax authorities. Keep your culture war out of my life.
Names that fall under Article 17 of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 that are currently used for meat products and meat preparations shall be reserved exclusively for products containing meat.
These names include, for example:

I finally found some genuinely well-designed shared streets here in New York City.
Broadway in NYC. People sitting outside and bikes going by.

You’re right, cyclists can be entitled too. After all, cities are shared spaces… and, annoyingly, cars also have a right to be there. Guess we’ll have to treat them with respect

Safe cycling infrastructure benefits everyone, including people using wheelchairs. Smooth, wide, and well-designed paths enhance accessibility, reduce conflicts with cars, and create barrier-free mobility corridors that support inclusive, safe, and independent travel for all.

🚴‍♀️ Women face unique barriers to cycling, from safety concerns and lack of infrastructure to cultural biases and limited confidence in traffic. Targeted women’s cycling training empowers through skill-building, peer support, and safety awareness, fostering equality on two wheels. 👇🫶

Just watched a smart, persuasive interview with @michaelemann.bsky.social & @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social on US media.

They were asked if “naming names” about liars & their motivations risks coming across as “partisan.”

I think about that a lot as I do similar things in the city-building arena. 1/2

What makes me happy: when pedestrians’ and cyclists’ safety is prioritized through solid infrastructure. Let’s make this the norm, treat people on foot and on bikes as the true VIPs of our mobility system and place them at the heart of urban planning.

The Dutch is probably the most terrible cuisine in Europe . I am happy they don’t design their cities like they make their sandwiches

This is a shadow debate anyways, meant to confuse consumers and stall the public support for the energy transition. By 2035, EVs will be the cheapest and dominant technology worldwide. European car makers will fail to succeed in this market. Politics will react like usual, by bailing them out.
