Wren swore she’d never return to Fenholt, but her pesky conscience got the better of her. Again. Now she’s desperate to keep a cursed necklace out of a necromancer’s grasp while dodging her old thieving crew. But is she desperate enough to trust a handsome priest of the dead?
A three by three grid advertising the wip book Thief of Death by author S.M. Lawrence. The top row of squares from left to right shows the title in bold print on a turquoise background, a monochromatic map of the city, and a digital sketch of the female main character. The woman has tan skin, a long brown braid, and a slightly mischievous expression. The center row shows from left to right the male main character, a quote from the book, and a black and white photo of an angel statue. The male main character is pale with shoulder length, wavy dark hair and a concerned expression. The bottom row shows from left to right a photo of a graveyard, a digital sketch of a skull with turquoise flames surrounding its head and turquoise pinpricks for eyes, and a photo of several old books and manuscripts.

Answering this for both book 1 & the whole series. This post will be vague; following posts will be more spoilery.

Book 1: Ends with the twins in direct conflict, & a cliffhanger with a big twist reveal.

Series: Happy ending! All truths are revealed & a more just world is reborn.

I already know how the duology will end, and I hope it'll be satisfying. I don't wanna spoil anything, but in broad strokes; the good guys win, some hearts are broken, some goodbyes are said and some kids find a new home. Also, a new race of mortals is discovered.

Atl will step up as a leader, though not in the way he expects. Ballard will find a lot of contentment as a consort to his king and maybe still having the occasional gunfight as a treat.

Wedding bells (not for Alexander, lol) and, if we're continuing a tradition, jumping out a window…

A series motif is evil being punished/unpunished. I think the sympathetic characters are rescued, but the "bad" guys houdini away. Alexander challenges/gets challenged on if this is good. +

October 14th – ultimate (final)

On gambits.

Av’ry tries to convince the city guard to please investigate the temple performing the mind control ritual before it’s too late.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“Back in interrogation, you all but admitted to owning the contraband. Why didn’t you deny it?”
Av’ry smiled, finally a question where the truth would serve him. “Exactly, why wouldn’t I deny it? Clearly, I could have. I didn’t, because I didn’t want to be released. If you send me out with R’evat, I will certainly end up just another mindless thrall. I’d rather be in prison.”
Sh’ol turned and eyed him skeptically. “You must admit that your story is hard to believe.”
The soldier was a professional; he had heard many men claim that they had been framed, many men with more believable stories than this. However, one difference was that this was a story he wanted to believe, a chance to discredit a man he resented, a chance to come out on top.
But that lure wasn’t enough to make him reckless. So, Av’ry played his final card. “You don’t need to take my word. There is a way to play this that would benefit us both and be of very low risk to you.”
Sh’ol watched him intently for a moment before finally speaking. “I’m listening.”

To violence or not to violence, that is the question...

From Book 2 of my #Atlantis trilogy.
Xa’aba closed her eyes, digging deep inside herself for patience. She smiled, but it was clearly one she didn’t want to wear.
“Young Mu’u, you know I have only the greatest respect for you and Raa Kena,” she said. “But I really can’t understand why you are so insistent about this. These cultists—these heretics—have shown us again and again that they’re willing to use violence to get their way. And you know their ultimate goal is to see you overthrown and replaced with Jasana. No matter how much mercy you show them, I promise they will not show any to you.”
“Sea Mother,” Icozoue interjected, “while it pains me to agree with Xa’aba about anything—believe me, it really does—in this case, I think she might be right.”
“Aren’t you the one always telling me that the Na’aqals are my children, Icozoue?” Mireia argued. “Well, these cultists are Na’aqals. Even if they hate me, they’re my children too.”
Xa’aba redirected her pleas toward Kena. “Sun Father, can’t you reason with her?”
“I agree with her,” he replied. “I don’t think slaughtering dozens of people in the streets is a good idea, even from a strategic view. What if the violence only gains them more sympathy? I know if I was one of them, I’d feel more determined to fight, not less.”

Vibes: at the TOP OF THE WORLD with Cerel and Jer!

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Cerel stood on a narrow trail along a steep
cliff face. He beheld mountains around him, bare rock and alpine flowers, blue sky—in front of him, not only
above. He did not recognize the mountains, but he smelled the sharp wind. A faint, sick worry prickled his insides, tangled with a vague surprise. Behind him, on the trail, Jer laughed out loud.

"See, brother? Isn't this living?"

"Jer! How did you get here?"

"What? I've always been here! What's the
matter? Does the homelonging trouble you? Here's the trick. Look at all the beauty around you. Take a deep breath. Think about all you've learned from the effort it took you to get here. This is the very top of
the earth, brother! We are the only ones ever to crest it! Why? Because we're not at home sitting under the dripping trees. Would you have it any other way?"

From my werewolf romantasy, EYES SHINE SILVER IN MOONLIGHT. Luke's deep in his "I won't say I'm in love" angst, and his bff Ramsey is wingmanning as hard as she can.
“You bribe me with my favorite drink,” Luke groaned. “And now you want me to play this childish game of who likes who?”

“Honestly, I came here to help you feel better after you had to deal with your dad." Ramsey leaned back in her chair. “I didn’t realize you were this far in the self-denial thing.”

“It’s irrelevant,” Luke said firmly, lifting his head again. “One, this job is temporary. Two, the feud is not.”

“Feuds end all the time."

“This one isn’t going anywhere,” Luke insisted. “And three, she’s not interested.”

“Four, full moon in three days,” Ramsey said, her lips curling into a grin. “Moonlust, my man. It’s the ultimate icebreaker.”

Here, Grilled tells Aubergine about his plan if the powers-that-be ever decide to take the inn away from them...
“I learned about it from a note I found written by Mamallot’s great-grandmother, the innmaster from fifty years ago, Yamma. In it, she talks about how Old Man Egg came back from the war with six bombs. They’re like… Ophidian weapons. They’re packed with the same material they use in guns. If they’re lit, they’ll blow up like…” Grilled struggled to find the right words, having never described an explosion of this magnitude before. “Like, they would destroy everything around us. The inn would be shattered into pieces and anyone around here would probably die. Innmaster Yamma placed them around the inn because she planned to destroy everything if the lady baron at the time took the inn away from her.”
Aubergine stared, dumbstruck. “And it would kill everyone? Even us?”
“It would kill whoever stays till the end. It’s the final ‘fuck you’ if we lose everything.” Grilled from the Good Thyme Inn books, sitting on a stool and looking menacingly at the viewer. His wrists are bright green with fire and he's holding knives. He's resting his chin on one hand. He has long silver hair and is wearing a hat with a rainbow feather.

In book 2, Bruce and Spencer teach Wren a game that is basically "Never Have I Ever." As a mercenary, Bruce has lots of downtime, on ships or horseback, or guard duty and this is one of his favorite games.

#Wrencer #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“Who among us hasn’t…” Bruce paused, scrunching his eyebrows together and tapping his chin thoughtfully, “been naked in public?”

Wren’s hand shot to her face, touching her finger to her nose as she looked around to see who else did the same. Her eyebrows crept slowly up as she realized she was the only one.

“What? All of you?”

“Skinny dipping,” Molly shrugged, leaning back against a pile of crates with her hands laced behind her head. Spencer’s face turned a little pink. It couldn’t be from the bright sun in the cloudless sky, not with that hat. The brim was wide enough to shade a small village. Bruce grinned and nudged his cousin roughly in the ribs.

“You tell it,” he snickered while the priest groaned and covered his face.

“Fine, fine! Stop elbowing me,” Spencer slapped at Bruce’s arm and faced Wren somewhat reluctantly. “We snuck into Saltbeard’s temple once to swim in the Seapool. One of the priests heard us splashing about and found our clothes. We had to make a run for it without them.”

“We streaked across Temple Square and there were three full moons that night,” Bruce howled and pounded the deck so hard the boat sloshed a little in the water, prompting a rough yell from the bow.

“Oi, quit playing grabass back there or I’ll dump you in the drink!”

“Yes sir! So sorry Skipper!” Wren answered politely, kicking Bruce roughly in the shin.

This is important. You need to focus, Spencer told his uncooperative brain.

The wooly fog was beginning to lift, but it was being replaced by something else. An angry buzzing he could feel through the soles of his feet was crowding in at the edges of his awareness. Out of instinct, Spencer reached for the Gray Lady and found the usually placid waters of her presence boiling like a tea kettle over the fire.

“Lady, bless and keep me,” he whispered on a shaky breath. He felt Her presence settle over him, a thin layer of cool gossamer tingling against his skin. The angry buzz resolved into something he could understand. It was pain and blood and fear steeped into the very stones beneath him. Every unlucky soul who’d been dragged into this cursed place and shed their last drop of blood, gasped their final dying breath upon these stones. They had not been grieved or given rites or buried. They were clamoring at Spencer all at once, crying out for him to witness them, to give voice to their pain and their suffering. The Lady’s touch upon him made it bearable, but only just.

I am debating on a few different endings for Josh. None of which are happy.

A) He succeeds in his plan to kill alternate Josh and take his life, but it slowly falls apart as he is still the same person he always was. Eventually he ends up worse off than before.

#PlotTober my ultimate ending for this book is Grio crushing his enemies, revelling in power and those he hates either dead, imprisoned or in hiding. The only issue is no one knows it was him and that’s going to fester into the second book.
Or it could end with him sat on a throne of skulls.

Back in Blood on the Snow this time, and Viola is not having a particularly good day

( saranadosfiction.com/2020/08/16/b... )
*What the-? Did they go to get help? Were they kidnapped? Did something happen while I was busy trying not to get shot?*

The last thought seemed to catch on something in her head. Slowly, and with a sinking, twisting feeling in her stomach, she looked down – and saw the spreading dark stain soaking through the lower leg of her trousers.

*Well… fuck.*

It didn’t hurt, which surprised her. She’d expected it to hurt.

Then again, being stabbed didn’t hurt nearly as much as she’d always thought it would either, and being shot was essentially like being stabbed with a blunt, round piece of metal, which meant… that it wasn’t anything like being stabbed at all, and that she was probably going into shock.

*Should probably tell someone about that.*

She tried to say something – she wasn’t sure what – but her face felt oddly numb, her lips wouldn’t work, and whatever words she did manage to get out were lost in the all-encompassing ringing aftermath of the shot.

*I think I’m going to faint*, she thought, with an odd, clinical detachment. And, as the world spun away into the grey, she had time for one final thought. *If he shot me… then who in the hells shot him?*

Spencer and Elton deal with some undead critters.

From my romantasy wip about a priest of the dead and a thief with a heart of gold.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity #Wrencer
“Are they supposed to do that?” Elton asked, his head cocked to the side as he watched the remnants with his unusual sight.

The undead constructs quivered, straining against Spencer’s command. The resistance spoke to some other intelligence controlling them, pushing back against his will. The soul of a sentient being possessed enough self-awareness to resist a compulsion, but these things were scraps animated with dribbles of stolen life force. Defiance should have been beyond their meager abilities.

“How many do you think you can manage?” Spencer asked, answering the novice’s question with one of his own. Elton scrunched his face in concentration, one hand clutching at the Gray Lady’s symbol dangling around his neck.

“Three,” the acolyte replied with a determined nod.

“Good. I’ll take the rest.”

Reaching for the tiny sparks of awareness animating the remnants was like sticking one's bare hand into a foul pit. It put Spencer in the mind of gutting an already rotted fish. Despite the roiling in his stomach, he seized hold of seven sparks and squeezed. The Lady’s power rose in him, numbing his fingers with its cold touch, and what passed for minds in the remnants winked out. Their bodies followed, dissolving into lumps of jelly and bone. An uneasy feeling settled heavily in the pit of Spencer’s stomach that had nothing to do with the mess underfoot.
