And that’s being generous. Middle class consumers are not restricted to online-only food access almost anywhere unless they live remotely by choice. Which is the exact opposite of food deserts and isolated geographies of poverty. Including rich consumers is just unserious.

We all know that. He is pretending not to know it.
Food quality is not as good as if you can choose yourself. Produce may not be as good, exp dates can be closer than if you can shop in person. Delivery can be helpful but it’s not cheaper when you consider this and the driver tip.

Also online prices can differ than in-store etc etc
And what delivery ever ends up being cheap anyway? Where I live we have to pay the delivery fee, local taxes on the delivery, and add a tip - sometimes all of that ends up being a third of the total cost.

Cheap delivery is not an adequate replacement for a physical store.

Grocery stores provide a range of services, not just food. And that’s assuming online delivery provides sufficient access to food. And there is no reason that poor consumers should be captured by an online-only service.
What if I told you Walmart is not the only store trying to move into low-cost delivery? And this is about Atlanta because this is about Atlanta opening a city-subsidized grocery store.

And lastly, cheap delivery is a more than adequate replacement for a physical store. This is about physical stuff!
And why should someone have to bear the cost of food delivery? Or be restricted to Walmart? And how did this become specifically about Atlanta? So many goal posts.

Anyway delivery is not an adequate replacement for a physical store in accessible proximity of where one lives.

Not only does this falsely constrain choice. It also exposes poorer consumers to dynamic pricing (which can skew predatory), require digital forms of payment, and we would never accept this as sufficient for other consumer classes.

Walmart+ costs $13/mo and gives free delivery on orders over $35.

You can get fresh produce in any 'food desert' near-ish to a Walmart, which includes all of Atlanta.
When you are talking about a food desert, the market is definitionally not providing access to food because there is…no store.

I have to drive 20-25 miles one way for a grocery store and I hate to say it but the 5 Dollar Generals that are closer aren't really offering great produce selections.

Especially given that study after study shows that people DO buy fresh food when it is made available to them. And in areas under the SNAP double-up program, people buy much more!!

The market does provide it. The reason private stores aren't selling fresh produce nearby is that not enough ppl want it (or rather, want it badly enough to pay what it actually costs to produce and deliver)--even when the federal govt is helping cover the bill via EBT.

Poor ppl have agency, too!
People need food. Market won’t provide it. Government should. It’s literally the whole point.

Turns out Mamdani's controversial proposal for government-run supermarkets isn't so novel. Other cities also are toying with the idea to bring fresh, affordable food to communities that do not have easy access to it. Good WSJ read (gift link)

One year for Christmas, I explained to my daughter about kids that didn't have more than one toy (if that) and she used all the allowance she had been saving to buy toys for kids in need. Have a kid who wants to something positive:

A new bill will head to Congress to prevent women from being turned away or sent home from a hospital while in active labour. This is after a video circulated of a Black woman who was dismissed from a hospital, only to give birth in her truck minutes later on the side of the road.
A woman gave birth 8 minutes after a hospital turned her away. A bill aims to stop that from happening again.
The legislation seeks to stop Black women from suffering during and after childbirth and hold hospitals accountable, according to bill language obtained exclusively by NBC News.
