what we're cutting:
health care
food stamps
preschool
environmental protections
international aid
scientific research

what we're buying:
Purchasing and converting these warehouse detention camps will cost the U.S. government billions of dollars. So far ICE has purchased at least half a dozen warehouses at a cost of $70-$110 million each. It'll cost billions more to refit them into detention camps, and hire staff.

Around 1 in 3 direct care workers are immigrants. There is already an insufficient workforce to meet the need, with more boomers aging into needing direct care every day.

Sometimes when I do a literature review I save an article that doesn't fit my inclusion criteria but might be a nice little treat for myself to read over lunch break.

When I think about leaving academia (often), part of that calculus is "ohhhh, but I'll loose my little treat articles!"

I know little about immigration policy, but I have studied our history of placing children with disabilities in long-term residential institutions. Losing previously acquired skills like toileting, language, and emotional regulation are hallmark signs of developmental regression.
The 5-year-old arrested by ICE In Minnesota is detained at Dilley. We reported on conditions there in the below article.

Parents said the food was contaminated with mold and worms & that children were so under so much stress that they were hitting their own faces & wetting themselves.
Analysis by The Marshall Project of ICE data obtained by the Deportation Data Project found that the Trump administration’s revival of family detention has swept thousands of children into ICE custody. At least 3,800 children under 18, including 20 infants, have been booked since Trump took office.

If someone doesn't think about consequences, say that.

If someone will believe any old thing that matches their ideology, say that.

If someone doesn't pay attention to details, willfully or otherwise, say that.

"Stupid" doesn't convey any of that information, and bolsters ableist myths besides.

To add on to this, because Erin's getting a lot of "ugh, then what CAN we say?" in the comments: the problem is not a naughty list of banned words to be replaced by approved synonyms. The problem is that general "intelligence" as a concept is largely incoherent and only useful for eugenics.
I’m seeing increased use of this word and I just want to gently suggest that if there’s one word you can manage to remove from your vocabulary it should be this one.

It was coined by a eugenicist who used it as a diagnosis to forcibly institutionalize and sterilize mentally disabled people.

Certainly this was all true of the nation in his lifetime. But in my lifetime, his criticisms have never felt so true of the nation right now.
