More context for the Flann O'Brien quote from The Third Policeman (1967) that I've been using as a metaphor for how we can perceive the heinous attacks on trans rights, and how cis folks and others might not understand how not only will their rights also be violated, *it's already happening*
excerpt (part 1 of 2) from the Flann O'Brien novel The Third Policeman:

'Why did your spear sting when the point was half a foot away from where it made me bleed?’
‘That spear,’ he answered quietly, ‘is one of the first things I ever manufactured in my spare time. I think only a little of it now but the year I made it I was proud enough and would not get up in the morning for any sergeant. There is no other spear like it in the length and breadth of Ireland and there is only one thing like it in Amurikey but I have not heard what it is. But I cannot get over the no-bicycle. Great Crikes!’
‘But the spear,’ I insisted, ‘give me the gist of it like a good man and I will tell no one.’
‘I will tell you because you are a confidential man,’ he said, ‘and a man that said something about bicycles that I never heard before. What you think is the point is not the point at all but only the beginning of the sharpness.’

A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

goddamn trump and his ridiculous tariff hammer.

Wells says it was "startling" to hear lawyers for the Department of Justice argue that the president's determination there is a rebellion is not reviewable by the courts.

Perry: But who gets to review that determination?

If her fetus is "in her placenta," that woman is in a ton of pain and the pregnancy's a nonstarter anyway. Good lord, don't take medical advice from this man.

RFK Jr: "Somebody showed me a TikTok video of a pregnant woman at 8 months pregnant -- she's an associate professor at the Columbia Medical School -- and she is saying 'F Trump' and gobbling Tylenol with her baby in her placenta. The level of Trump Derangement Syndrome is now a pathology."

I knew something was afoot in Missouri: On 9/30/25, Judge Kacsmaryk transferred a long-standing suit re: the FDA’s regulation of mifepristone from TX to the eastern district of Missouri. “All but one of the current full-time district court judges in [that district] were appointed by…Trump.” 1/

With federal support, Valley Children's Hospital was building a backup battery system to protect patients from power outages. But Trump’s Department of Energy has cut its funding just days after announcing millions in handouts to coal power plant owners.

Just remembered this jaw-dropping graph by @oceansclimatecu.bsky.social showing the rate of change in CO2 during the previous two deglaciations of the Pleistocene (which, as a fun aside, featured ~400 feet of sea level rise) as compared with today

We probably need to go back to ~350 ppm CO₂ equivalent for temperatures to stop rising.

We are now above 573 ppm (GHG forcing of +4.1 W/m²).

That's without aerosols cooling things down.

There's too much uncertainty to be sure, but going back to 350 ppm is already a Herculean task.

Trump learned exactly one thing—tariffs—about economics in whatever legitimate schooling he absorbed, and he profoundly misunderstands how they work.

He's gonna keep pumping that balloon until it explodes

He thinks he's a clever boy and it's an all-purpose economic solution that no one else really knows. He is very stupid.

I just can’t help being annoyed by Americans making a reference to ‘the Hague’, as the US is one of the very few countries that have consistently refused to acknowledge the ICC.
