"If we consider books as medicine we understand that it’s good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment” - Umberto Eco

There’s a brutal hypocrisy in Peter Thiel, a man who sees himself as Aragorn, yet appears to the rest of us as Sauron. Tolkien had a loathing of technology and ‘machines’ that would horrify him if he were alive today to see what one of his so-called admirers has produced.

The news today about "Atomic bombs" is so horrifying one is stunned. The utter folly of these lunatic physicists to consent to do such work for war-purposes: calmly plotting the destruction of the world! Such explosives in men's hands, while their moral and intellectual status is declining, is about as useful as giving out firearms to all inmates of a gaol and then saying that you hope "this will ensure peace".
Well we're in God's hands. But He does not look kindly on Babel-builders.

Hear me out…they were such a teen-pop band when they appeared. I was snobby about them. Have to admit now these’re some bangin tunes, well-played. And full of joy - which feels good these days

I once saw The Blue Nile’s album Hats in a remainder bin in Auckland for $3. I wanted to upend the table and curse these people for ignorance and complete absence of taste. But I just bought the CD to replace my cassette.
This is their debut of course, but every note’s a winner

As others have said, they got better. But what a debut!

Almost every “hero” I’ve ever loved has turned out to have toes of clay, if not feet. Not Billy Bragg.

I went into 80 loving rock spinoff bands (looking at you Whitesnake) then got a musical education over the next decade. Here’s a group I got turned onto: contender for #5debutalbums8084 from Lloyd Cole and the Commotions

This seemed like such a student-y record. My girl friends, more sophisticated than I, played it to death. It grew on me and I still play it now

Two nights of 3:45am alarms, blazing full moon lighting the sky like daytime and washing out the light of everything else, comet included. Then two days of post-processing battles, as comet processing is maddeningly tricky.

But I finally pulled it off: here is C/2025 A6 Lemmon. 🔭

Do some foresee an (un?)intended consequence of this awful change?

If parents decide one of them needs to drop their income, would that force one parent (possibly more often women than men) to “stay at home”? That would make Destiny, etc. happy

True or nonsense, this is still more ideological bs.

It's 2025 and our economic model is still reliant on maintaining a decent bufferstock of unemployed people. This model was *designed* to ensure that employers have the upper hand (and labour could be uberised). Govt distract us from this reality by bashing beneficiaries and abdicating responsibility

Wonder what Mister "The world doesn't owe you a living" Luxon would be doing if the Fifth Labour Government had said that to Air New Zealand in 2001 instead of writing a $900m bail-out cheque.

Kids do well if they can, not kids do well if they wanna - Dr. Ross Greene

Hey, Luxon! We ALL do well if we can.

Repeat over and over. Their lives will be much better for it.

And so will ours.

Saw them at Reading ‘80. Di Anno was singing - with short hair! Bruce Bruce was there singing for Samson, whose masked drummer was in a cage iirc…

FFS Luxon! Answer the question!! The sanctions are already there. Why add on this ultra-punitive crap? (PS That’s a rhetorical roar of frustration. We know why he’s doing it don’t we…)

'Free' healthcare isn't free. It's paid for by taxpayers. But that helps to ensure that people pay according to their means.

The rich can have big houses and fancy cars, but any civilised society should allow all its citizens free access to healthcare and education.
