No, the Iditarod was not created to honor the delivery of diphtherial serum to Nome.

Fairbanks 530-730pm Halloween, prime trick or treat hours, and it’s straight up raining and above freezing. I can find no prior occurrence of such wretchedness. Halloween 1970 closest, with temps in the upper 30s but the rain came after 9pm. #akwx @leahwrenn.bsky.social @tomhewittnews.bsky.social
My FB memories from late October are full of ice fishing photos. Sigh.

The President wants to use the military to crack down on Americans who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights to oppose him. I can’t think of a better reason to insist on exercising those rights.

Mary Peltola is beating Dan Sullivan by 2 pts in our most recent US Senate survey. Why?

Sullivan wins 87-9 among conservatives.

Peltola wins 97-2 among progressives.

So Sullivan's boat is leakier...

But among moderates (41% of the voting population), Peltola is winning by a whopping 58-32. Ouch!
I just saw that neither Dan nor Lisa joined the new bipartisan Senate Stewardship Caucus to protect public lands.

Federation ≠ decentralization.

This is a key misunderstanding & it's concerning. The infra on which a federated protocols/systems run must still be maintained/provisioned by someone. As we saw w all the 'decentralized' chains going down last week, such infra is often licensed from hyperscalers.
2/ Anyway, IETF "presentations" are supposed to be discussions. So, as it so often does, it comes down to chairing, not to the people with time on the agenda.
1/ A bunch of years ago I gave a paper at a conference where another author was from Japan and spoke no English, had had his paper transliterated so he could read it. Things went south very quickly during questions.

This is an opportunity to help and reach people all over the state. @thealaskadems.bsky.social and Democrat candidates and the #akleg
Thanks! Years ago I found that it was the best way to get a handle on who's running qualifiers, etc., and what to expect from the race season. (I think reactions to last year's Iditarod might have been different if folks could see how teams had done in other races they'd run that season, too)
Updated the combined race roster to include the Two Rivers 100 and the Two Rivers 200. There are now 12 races covered. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Within DAYS for Merbok. Biden signed it as soon as it was requested by governor in 2022.
Federal declarations sometimes come within days of a disaster, as was the case when the remnants of Typhoon Merbok struck in 2022. Or, as occurred with three Alaska disasters last year, the federal declaration can come months later.

(From @alaskapublic.org)
What's in a disaster declaration? One big detail matters for storm survivors.
Only a few Alaska disasters have qualified for a federal program that distributes as much as $85,000 per household.

Alaska squirrels can out-pudge Texas squirrels every day of the week and then some. This is Stumpy (of the abbreviated tail) who spent entirely too much time at our bird feeders.
Oh! Also in Fairbanks, Apocalypse Design. *The* place to go for extreme cold weather gear, and I think pretty much everybody in Fairbanks has at least one item they've gotten there.
Cold Spot Feeds, in Fairbanks, which is probably the best dog mushing outfitter anywhere but is also the busiest place in town for pet owners in general. Everything from runner plastic to high-density kibbles to gerbil bedding.

With the addition of the T-Dogs, I've now got 10 races in the combined race roster. The second sheet shows how many races each musher has entered.
