I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

@rdvquantum.bsky.social to expand on this, this was a phenomenal talk. Not just on the technical side, but bringing in the history of the field and the social and political implications of technology development was exceptional

I am so angry and sad about this. Draconian staff cuts at KYUK in Bethel are an incalculable loss for the region and indeed all of Alaska. #AlaskaSky #PublicRadio

Tribes that restored buffalo are killing some to feed people because of the shutdown
A deal to end the government shutdown is too late for about 30 bison on the Fort Peck reservation in northern Montana.

If you're unable to see the aurora from where you are, the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute has a couple of aurora cams. One at explore.org/livecams/aur..., too. It's still a bit light here for great viewing

Yukon Quest Alaska teams have been announced, so I've added them to the combined race roster. Gotta say that it looks like a moderately interesting field, given that it's small. I'd really like to see Josi Shelley have a breakout year.

The snow’s a little thin in the woods and the thin layer of ice underneath it makes skiing noisier than it ought to be, but it’s fantastic to be on skis again

Not an option in Alaska. Is anybody looking at how disruptions to air travel are hitting deliveries of groceries, medical supplies, etc. to the villages? (Anchorage and Seattle are two of the impacted airports)
Many many hours and many many ATC delays later, I’ll be getting in at 3am rather than 3pm. If you have any upcoming flights, good fucking luck. Consider taking the train

jews arrived in america radicalized by their experience of antisemitic persecution. inspired by the ideals of socialism and the labor movement, we built ourselves up from nothing, and fought for our equality. then affluence, the rosenbergs, and zionism proceeded to wring the radicalism out of us.

One of the saddest days of the year is the day I take my fly rods and waders out of the truck and put them away for the winter. Yesterday was that day.
