You’re going to want GOD’S JUNK DRAWER I’m just saying. First book in a long time where I had no idea what was coming next.

Guess it's time to update the pinned post.

I'm Peter Clines. I write books. Some of them are very popular. All of them are fun in a sci-fi-horror-speculative sort of way. The newest, GOD'S JUNK DRAWER, is out November 11th. I also post about other folks' books, movies, toys, and other stuff I enjoy
The cover for GOD'S JUNK DRAWER by Peter Clines, showing a dinosaur skeleton in a black void, along with a space suit helmet, a human skull, a bionic arm, and a stone-tipped spear. The cover of THE BROKEN ROOM showing two massive red doors opening to reveal an old classroom chair. On the wall behind it, a small child sits in the chair
The cover for PARADOX BOUND showing an old fashioned car driving on a Mobius strip The cover for TERMINUS, showing a stormy sea with an island in the distance, and massive tentacles reaching down out of the dark clouds

I didn’t want to say anything but after calling the president, Machado called me and said, “You should totally have this, too. It’s a shame and scar on the committee that they didn’t give you this award for your amazing writing, which will influence generations!”

I didn’t want to mention it before.

It all comes down to the ending, which I won’t spoil other than to say the dog does not die or even suffer any serious harm, so if you’re worried about that, don’t.

To discuss more would risk ruining things. One day, but not today.

I recommend for atmosphere and style, which does count for a lot

Good Boy: A frustrating experience that I hesitate to criticize. So many great scenes and a great premise, only to drop the ball at the 5 yard line.

And yet, a labor of love, well done in almost every regard. An original film with a great deal to recommend.

A bunch of mixed emotions on this one

I too am outraged that the NFL halftime show is being performed by a musician I’ve barely heard of! It must be because the NFL is out of touch, and certainly not because I’m uncool! Definitely an indication of societal collapse that they aren’t catering to my very specific tastes from 25 years ago!

Every book I’ve written has been made better by editorial input.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Need help understanding—or explaining—how Trump is destroying the US soybean market through tariffs and they using tariff funds to helping to bailout the MAGAlike Argentine president who's selling to China instead of US? Here you go: youtube.com/shorts/8Gm60...

The danger is obvious from the outside. Always looking backward, always fighting changes.

To be fair, changes are not inherently good. Sometimes, subtraction is necessary. Missteps can be made.

But if it is your goto solution, it will always lead to the same place eventually.

The result is a cycle of reversals. Get rid of the transgenders. Didn’t work? Get rid of the gays? Still not working? Get rid of X.

Last in, First out, as the saying goes. Always with an eye towards taking away things to achieve perfection.
aleemartinez.bsky.social
Heard it said that conservatism is a philosophy of subtraction. It endorses removing things for improvement, which leads to the opposite of growth.

The world cannot be truly improved. It can only be returned to a less imperfect state.

When that doesn’t work, the solution is more subtraction.

They’ve betrayed everyone they’ve ever worked with, rejected every belief they’ve ever professed, scapegoated every failure…

But I’m sure that won’t happen to me when I sign up with them.

Sad to hear about the passing of the Michelangelo of Movie posters, RENATO CASARO. The Man painted so many iconic posters, specially in the 70s/80s: CONAN, TERMINATOR, DUNE, TOTAL RECALL, DANCE WITH THE WOLVES, BLOW OUT, FLASH GORDON, RAMBO, NEVER-ENDING STORY, and the list goes on and on. 1/2

It’s like the opening of Patton, except sort of the community theater version performed by people who skimmed a summary of the movie on Wikipedia and like to call each bro a lot.

Also, the community theater troop isn’t very good.

Is evil always this awful and goofy simultaneously?

WELP the stupidest idiots in history are in charge of the country, but I'm still required to tell you it's exactly SIX WEEKS until the release of GOD'S JUNK DRAWER.

And, hey, semi-related, do you need someone fun to interview for your website? Your podcast? Your late-night talk show? Let me know!

About half of my books have women narrators for the same reason, even though many are not written in 1st person. 6 or 7, off the top of my head.
scalzi.com
I see it being noted that male authors infrequently have women audiobook narrators, and I'm not here to argue that assertion - it's probably true - but I'll note that two of my last three audiobooks had women narrators (Amber Benson and Tavia Gilbert) because, you know, the protagonists were women.

It does not. The only trad pub book of mine that isn’t.

Also, there was a renegotiation with Amazon, and the audio rights have been renewed but contracts are still waiting to be signed. So everything other than the Constance Verity books might still be (temporarily) unavailable.

It is important to see this sort of straight talking, precisely because of the executive order last week that conflated criticism of the government with terrorism.

Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists & protesters when unprovoked what would we call it? If officials marched down streets harassing civilians & demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism"

“Stories are made up things!” I yell into the void. “They imitate real life as needed, but they need not be limited by real life. If you’re writing for realism, you’re probably writing badly.”

This is why communication is so important and how poorly chosen words can bring out the worst in anybody.

But everyone thinks they can communicate well, regardless, even as they antagonize a guy just bringing them tacos they never actually met.

The hostility from just those few words made me muse on picking up the food, driving it within a minute or two, and canceling at the last minute. My rating would take a hit, but nothing serious.

I wouldn’t do it, but the power of language is such that the thought crossed my mind.

Been doing food delivery because, hey, bills and the life of a writer who hasn’t sold anything in a while, and one note was: “Don’t ring doorbell. Don’t leave on table. Or I will remove the tip!”

Anon Customer, I’m happy to deliver your food the way you like it. You do not need to threaten me.

When Truthiness was first coined, they had no idea how prescient they were. From tariffs to Tylenol, rapture to DEI, we are living in a world where reality is just a thing so many people “know” in their gut.

Information can only hurt that feeling, which is why ignorance is so appealing.
