Everyone has voices in their head. Mine just happen to be cheerleaders.

This, and also: if your answer is “I can’t afford to be fearless,” ask yourself at least once if you are sure.

You don’t owe it to anybody else to offer a defense but you do owe it to yourself.

The title verse of “We Shall Overcome” and most of the others are in the future tense. One verse is in the present: “We are not afraid TODAY.”

That is the most important message for our current moment. If you can “afford” to be fearless, do it.

My muscle memory has decided to randomize “take screenshot” and “close app” hotkey access and as you can imagine this does not bring me joy

Speaking of "games that get to the point"...

Elechead is a tight retro platform puzzler with Metroid-style exploration and a well-integrated soundtrack. Short, but sweet. (beat in 2hr, est. another 1hr to find everything) Totally worth $5.

I hope to make more games following this philosophy someday.

I specifically want to make a Civ-style game that has a ramp up and learning curve like galaxy.fun - including the sometimes surprising level of strategic depth.

Perfection is achieved… when there is nothing left to take away 🧙‍♀️ #indiedev

Captain your starship and recruit an eclectic crew from various space-fantasy tribes & factions in Once Upon a Galaxy!

This philosophy is central to Once Upon a Galaxy’s design- you start the game, immediately start picking cards, and you learn as you go.

Some players chafe at this! “Tell me all the rules!” Well, we made for guide.galaxy.fun for y’all 😉 but it’s important to us the game is fun to “just play”!

Get me into the game quickly. Don’t make me read a bunch of anything before I’m “playing”. Integrate your tutorials, story, and progression into the play. Let me grow at my own pace. Don’t punish me for experimenting or learning. Make every interaction with the game count! #gamedesign

I’ve developed a pretty core understanding of what I like in games, which I also design towards.

I want games to maximize the amount of time I am “playing” and minimize “learning” or “grinding” or “menuing” or whatever.

This isn’t some “universal design truth”, but it sort of is “for me”.
alexisjanson.com
I also really can’t do Civilization-style games anymore. It’s sort of the same problem.

I don’t want to spend potentially hours learning various systems and being overwhelmed with stats before I can make coherent plays and actually feel like I’m “playing” the game.

I’m fine accepting a game isn’t for me, but it’s a weird “maturing” of my taste.

I would love to explore the game’s depths but I just bought 10 more games on Steam sale, I don’t need to play something that feels like it intentionally wastes my time…

Silksong bosses feel psychologically just like Candy Crush to me- going thru the same motions over and over, the game will eventually reward me but it’s not really “fun” it’s just addictive? Especially with the pointless runbacks.

I get the appeal but my time is so much more valuable these days?
alexisjanson.com
I already have that on my devices to at least some degree :) which definitely helps!

i get lots of eyestrain? :)

after my recent 2+ day migraine I am instinctively turning everything to dark mode

I still hate dark mode but I hate migraines more X_X
alexisjanson.com
I believe so! I haven’t changed anything intentionally and a quick review of the thread looks accurate.

There will be a few “extra rules” for Candylar - specifically, Candy spells and secret rares will only be in your (shared) pool if you have at least one (non-Mimic) Candy card in your deck.
