“I’m going to hand out big dicks to little-dick ICE agents.”

The Geneva Convention disintegrated. The Founding Fathers wept. Somewhere, a federal HR manager clutched their chest and whispered, “No. Not like this.”

His ex-wife says he kept a book of Hitler’s speeches at his bedside table.
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.

Any reconstructive project that doesn’t begin from the premise of severely disciplining the American oligarchic class is DOA. Criminal prosecutions, nationalization of tech platforms, knee capping Citizens United and more.
“Returning to where we were means going back to a state of affairs that was manifestly unsustainable. To borrow from the architect of the Democratic Party’s most enduring platform, any recovery that simply restores things will see us all right back where we are now.” @rauchway.bsky.social
We need reconstruction, not restoration—as FDR knew.

What his supporters see and admire most is precisely his grotesque racism. That and his willingness to use symbolic and real violence to strip black and brown people of formal rights and recognition.
"For years, a cottage industry of political observers has contorted itself to obscure and occlude the obvious. That regardless of what others see in him, Trump’s entire political career...cannot be understood outside the context of his bitter, deep-seated racism." (gift link)

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.

America has not always been a fascist state because racialized violence and colonialism are not unique to fascism. Liberal democratic states are also guilty of these crimes. This distinction matters for understanding and confronting far right radicalization and shredding of “formal” civil rights.
Another small issue with saying "We have always been a fascist nation" is that fascism itself is about 100 years younger than the US by even the most generous measures. Fascism doesn't just mean "racism" or "authoritarian violence," and what Trump is doing is very distinctly fascist.

It’s ironic that they’re like “if we do ethnic cleansing we’ll have a high trust neighborly society” and then Minneapolis is literally doing high trust neighborly society and they’re like nooooo
Many Americans are terrible neighbors to each other, and that is why MN is striking everyone as extraordinary activism... when they are telling us that it is not. They're good neighbors!

It's no wonder that "being a shitty neighbor" is the hallmark of our domestic politics and our foreign policy.

I really do not understand why the majority of Republicans don't just move to Russia. Or DPRK, if that is their preference. They can live the lives they so strongly seem to desire without fighting about it, and without losing more time.

So much of American history is just impulsive and extremely stupid elites, who don't believe in consequences because they have never personally experienced them, doing highly consequential stuff because they're bored or believe it might make them richer. I guess a lot of our culture, too.

The American political right is a cesspit of bigotry, white grievance, conspiracism, religious zealotry, violent ideation and action, and plutocrat money fueling it all.

Among rightist political and thought leaders, there’s little to no good faith. There’s just power and gleeful destruction.

Many have commented that the war on science and medicine is irrational from the standpoint of capitalism. The destruction of the CDC makes sense though if you realize the war is actually on us, our communities, our very lives. It’s a class war against life itself.

These regime change wars, beginning with Iraq, are about instituting chaos and never letting any successful democratic or marginally independent state from ever arising in the Middle East. American Israeli hegemony are the ends, failed states are the means.
“The rationale for war was rotten. Despite advocates’ stated aims, the war was ultimately motivated by a desire for regime change. Neoconservatives in the Bush administration thought they could transform Iraq and the wider region into a pro-U.S. democratic stronghold.”
