Edith Cavell, English nurse, was shot dead by a German firing squad #OTD 12 October 1915. Her death was a cause of national outrage and mourning. After the War, her body was returned home to England and buried in the cathedral close at Norwich.

A friend sent me this. It’s a little wonder. Lamberts of Norwich was a tea importer, wholesaler and retailer originally established in London Street in 1843, they had a warehouse in Hay Hill too, demolished in the late 1960s. They used to produce collectors cards. This set of cacti is from 1962.
The cover of a lamberts card booklet or Picture card album. Some lovely drawings of cacti on the cards.

Excitement on Harwich Beach yesterday: hundreds of Pointed Snails on the upper beach. First recorded here about 20 years ago, this is still the only Essex site so far as I am aware.

LLMs are doubly deceptive. Most people think that they can ask it a question and get an answer. The majority of the rest think that you can ask an LLM a question and it will return what an answer might look like, statistically.

But it's actually even worse. It doesn't "read" the prompt; it guesses.

Another voice silenced in Russia. Pavel Syutkin — a historian of Russian cuisine, not a political activist — has been arrested in Moscow for allegedly spreading “fake news” about the Russian army.

Almost midnight in Kyiv.
Calm.
We have power, water.
Drops of rain gently sing a lullaby
to those who didn’t sleep last night.

Please, don’t take for granted
the quiet treasures you have –
power, water, windows, a roof.

Vera Erdesz - you were just a child. Evil men (and some women, too) murdered you and an estimated 1.5 million girls and boys. Never forget what humans can do to humans.

10 October 1933 | A Hungarian Jewish girl, Vera Erdesz, was born.

In 1944 she was deported to #Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber.

many ppl are saying - have you heard this yet? it’s true - many people are saying that life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. it’s true. you’re hearing it more and more.

This is such sharp analysis. It's so important to discuss this painful situation with tact and respect, which you always do, Ben. Many (not all) interventions are placebos and the placebo effect is not non-existent. It provides the sense that Something Has Been Done. But is that really fair?
