really hasn't. A lot of times it's vibes or I'll see a TV character and think "What if I used that person but in a (insert fantasy character trope)."

I'm watching Monk's 100th episode and I wonder how many cases an elvish detective could solve in their centuries of lifetime.
#pretendpanel, maybe this has changed for you, or maybe not! But either way, I'm keen to know...

More organized. I go back-and-forth with using varying sentence structures. I also make my character's dialogue sound realistic. I remember a writing prof told me to use contractions in dialogue because that's how people speak, fantasy or not.
#pretendpanel, let's get into the hard questions, shall we?

January 9th: How has your craft evolved lately? (as in, your prose, your structuring, voice and tone, etc)

Day 9 #critterary

LOVE DRAGONS! I use a ton of them in my work, both D&D and fictional. Never use them as bad guys or forces of destruction. Always good guys

Some examples of dragons in my work:

Jun, a dragon detective and her druid sidekick.

Phylinel, loves Dragon Scout cookies and pastries

Day 9
While dinos weren't super common, I did have a good time talking about them ☺️🦕🦖 Now, what's today? *check notes* We're at Dragons now? Ohhh this'll be a BUSY day! 😅🐲🐉

Day 8 #critterary

I've never really done dinos in my work. I had an NPC ranger with raptor animal companions. She's based on a funhouse mirror version of a Gossip Girl character. I had to watch the show because roommate loved it and I needed to entertain myself.
Day 8
Pivoting to something really different today - dinosaurs! I feel like they still aren't in enough stories, but I'm always happy to see when they do 😌 So focusing on the 'terrible' (but actually amazing) lizards of the land!

#critterary Day 7

I haven't written that many werewolves. One werewolf I did is Cassi who's a noblewoman who fell in love with a fey prince. They both moved to Pinegaard after exiling from their families. They're the April and Andy of the Pinegaard Animal Wardens.
Day 7
Alright, time for shifty puppies! Werewolves!🐺 Big enough to have their own category, so why not have a day to focus on these beings?

#critterary Day 6

Canines

I've written a lot of Doggos in my D&D work.

In my homebrew world of Pacifica, there's the Order of Canine Knights, who are chivalrous warriors who fight alongside but also take care of dogs. The Order also helps with rescue and dog sanctuaries across the continent (1/
Day 6
Back to animals with dogs and all the woofs and yips in their family (might wanna wait a day for shifty puppies 😉)
Got any dog etc. in your work? If not, a favorite one from other work?

Catching up on Off the Grid. Tom reviews a Herb Abrams UWF show. Wrestling itself is fine but behind the scenes is bonkers.

I always think of the Dark Side episode about Herb and quotes from B. Brian Blair and Mick Foley.

"Herb died doing what he loved. cocaine and hookers." - B. Brian Blair.

#critterary Day 5

The Moonhound

A legendary wolf who roams the woods near Pinegaard. They're descended from Hawti, the great wolf who herds the Moon across the sky. The Moonhound is a friend of the Parks Guild and has guided them through difficulties.
Day 5
With prompts picking various Free Slot days, I picked Mondays for a tiny break! (I hate Mondays like a certain cat does 🐱...) Perfect chance to introduce a unique creation from your list, or anything else!

#Januaryworldbuilders Day 4

Terrifying? ... The Friends of Pinegaard.

These are a group of the wealthier residents whose family has lived in the city for a long time. Most of them live in the Grace Neighborhood or nearby. They aren't fans of adventurers or tourists who come to town (cont.)
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, good morning! In the same vein as yesterday's question, what's something terrifying or scary in your world? Do you have any haunted places? Desolate, lonely places? Any site where something dreadful happened?
January 4, 2026 at 2:51 PM
I don't imagine making a full blown TTRPG with Pinegaard as it's a community in a larger world, but I do like the idea of using RPG methods to build and expand on it. I'm looking at Daggerheart Campaign Frames as a template and it works. I have my qualms about DH and Campaign Frames.

#Januaryworldbuilders

Hello, my name is Al. I write cozy fantasy and cozy D&D stuff. I'm continuing to work on my world of Pinegaard ... well Pinegaard is more of a small city. Think Pawnee in the Forgotten Realms, with a little bit of Gravity Falls.
Welcome to a new year of worldbuilding! Let's kick off this year with Day 1 of #JanuaryWorldbuilders in which I ask you: tell me about yourself and the world(s) you're building. Just a general overviews. We'll get into the weeds throughout the year
January 4, 2026 at 12:48 PM
#januaryworldbuilders Day 2

Something I intend to leave mysterious is why the world is in a time of peace. Most fantasies either have war going on or are just coming off it. Pinegaard has been peaceful for decades. There's still conflict but it's mostly between neighbors and not countries.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, good day! In worldbuilding, sometimes we get deep into figuring out how things work because we want to explain it to the reader. Today, I ask you for the opposite: what is something that you intend to leave mysterious? What doesn't get explained?
January 4, 2026 at 12:47 PM
#Januaryworldbuilders

Something grand is Igor's Wrath, the megadungeon under Pinegaard. Imagine a massive D&D dungeon under Pawnee and that's it. It attracts adventurers who seek to plunder it, but the dungeon and its denziens are also part of the community. (cont.)
#JanuaryWorldbuilders For me, one of the most enjoyable things about worldbuilding is coming up with grand ideas: scenery, a building, a tree, a planet, anything you consider big, beautiful, imposing, grand, majestic... pick your synonym. Tell me about it
January 4, 2026 at 12:38 PM
Day 4 #critterary

The folklore in my world relates to mythical animals like the Moonhound, a wolf that lives in the mountains and appears during full moons.

In my Waterdeep Parks and Recreation materials, I had Moth Man in charge of the Waterdeep Free Meals program and distribution.
Day 4
Alright, time for something a little different - cryptids! Either the traditional examples of this world's Sasquatch, etc., or folklore from your story, where such things are just make-believe tales... or are they?🤔

Day 3

I love kitties of all kinds. I've written so much of them in my D&D stuff that I actually released a Cat Lover's Bundle on the DMs Guild.

In fiction, cats are usually seen around cities and with characters.

Flyntt has a cat named Muffin who helps him with investigations.

Day 3
Switching over to animals, with my alternating everyday thing, to keep switching it up. This time it's kitties! (Anthros also welcome these days, too!) 🐱🐯🦁 Got any cats in your work? If not, a favorite one from other work?

#Critterary Day 2

Written some D&D stuff featuring vampires. For my fiction work, my MC Flyntt dates Ria, a dhampir and town manager. She's related to the vampire Baron of Blood (will name later). The Baron doesn't hate Flyntt but he loves his baby sister and has that animosity toward him early on
Day 2
*whew* Already on day 2?? Sure flew by for me, reading everyone's intros 😅
Anyhow, starting off big! Vampires! Or maybe something vampir-ic?
And for every card, if there's nothing of relevance from your story, feel free to post ones you enjoy!🦊
