$2.6 million for an AI surveillance system that can't tell the difference between a gun and Doritos, and the Inspector General response is: staff need more training on how to use AI.

Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art

The prompts are literally the only part of AI art that has remotely any creativity to it. It requires the mildest of effort and thought to experiment and try to give the machine better directions.

They have zero creativity at all

I cannot stop laughing. This is so indicative of what's wrong with these AI people and how they view art

I am a little tired of being yelled at for this but apparently not tired about: heroin addiction is not RFK’s problem. He’s a sociopath. Most addicts aren’t. Honestly, walk into an NA meeting, grab the first person with a few years to be head of HHS and they’d probably do a better job than Bobby.
This is what happens when you put a privileged, 14 year heroin addict in charge of health. Duh

I'm sorry New Yorkers I'm not familiar with your Adam Friedland but based on the intro, my expectation for humor is high.

Hell with it, I'm just going to post the whole thing here via screencap and alt text. It's Kaleb Horton, man, his writing always deserves the second read, especially since it could have just easily been lost forever like so much else. Read it, share it.

We started the Noir collection with Blackout (Death by Proxy), very fun. I think of Criterion as a digital video rental store where I trust the human curation. Fuck your algorithms.
Apologies for the (unpaid!) advertisement, but if you've been tempted to subscribe to the Criterion Channel, I just learned that you can use the code BLACKFRIDAY25 to get 25% off an annual subscription—$75 rather than $100. It's one of the few streaming channels I never regret paying for.

✋ Birthright citizenship for me!
For at least a year, I've been returning to the question, how would you know when it's time to leave the US? For this piece, I asked trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer Americans who, with their families and partners, have recently fled the country, about how they made this decision and how they left.
When Is It Time to Flee?
Trans people and their families are facing hard questions and choices as threats to their safety and rights proliferate.

I am ready to go beyond implication and say after reading the facts here that one of the most recognizable people working in the White House almost certainly had ICE arrest her nephew's mother as a favor to her brother
This article heavily implies that ICE is being used in a custody dispute to help Karoline Leavitt's brother get his son and have the mother locked up in ICE detention
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I kind of take it for granted that Keith Parkinson was a huge deal, because he and his son always hung out casually at EverQuest/Sony Online events. I had a few signed prints. He was very nice, just a guy. But I enjoy seeing his art pop up on Bluesky often, it's sweet.
