This surprises Ed into silence. He slowly turns the base of the wine glass, looking over and over and over Stede's face. Hard to tell if he's a puzzle for Ed to solve, or if Ed's not sure of his intentions. Maybe Ed's simply unsure of his intelligence. "Sorry if I'm just rubbing it in, but," Ed's still giving him the quietest look of confusion, searching over Stede's expression for…Stede doesn't know what. "did you not sit next to my statue every day at lunch for…uh, a while? The one that. Again, not trying to be a dick, but. The one that has my professional name on it? And you never googled it." "I got…erm. Well, I found you very compelling and I…more compelling than some spinny metal moons, all right?" [Ed's flirtatious, softly glowing] "'Very compelling,' huh?"

I thought you said you saw it in the airport?" "Well, yes, I saw it, but Ed, I was at O'Hare, and you know how busy it is - "Ohhhh fuck you," Ed groans. "I saw the cover, as you might recall, and I thought it looked great! But I didn't really see any of the words on it. Looked quite piratey though, so l suppose it being about Blackbeard isn't a shock _" "It's not supposed to look piratey," Ed says, feeling like his eyes are about to pop out of his head. His head, which hurts so fucking bad. "It's not about pirates. It's not about Blackbeard, god you're such a fucking —" it is at this point that Ed's headache gets so overwhelming that he has to silently close his eyes and tip over. "Ed, you're unwell, I don't think this is a good time to be arguing."

I should be writing one of the other two fics I'm trying to get done, but instead I wanted to write Ed pining for his freshly dumped bestie :))

“He dumped me.” Possibly the best three words Ed has heard in a very long time. So much so that he jumped up from the sofa with unbridled joy and couldn't stay still the second those words were whispered through the phone to him. It makes him feel like an arsehole. You see, from anyone else, he'd do and say the usual shit you do when someone's been dumped even if you don't really care, however, the guy who said those words just so happens to be his best friend and the love of his life. Except, said best friend is obviously not his partner. This is where both the excitement and feeling like an arsehole comes in. His brain is happily fixating on this exact series of thoughts: best friend has been dumped, equals, best friend is now single, meaning, Ed has a chance. Maybe. If his best friend also likes him back. Unfortunately though, he can’t do anything as of yet because right now his best friend, Stede, is crying down the phone to him and he needs to be supportive and not be a dick by giggling with glee. And look, he's also just genuinely happy that Stede isn't with that asshat anymore. He's not just calling him that in a I-hate-you-because-Stede-chose-you-and-not-me kind of way, but rather because he was a horrible, horrible person. He never treated Stede right; rarely took him on dates and when he did it was never anything Stede wanted to do, hardly listened when Stede got excited about something or listed unusual facts and always belittled him over both major and minor things. Ed hated it all, and most importantly, hated stupid fucking Roger. What kind of dumbass name is Roger anyway? Ed had seen it from the start and whenever he tried to bring it up Stede would wave it off even when he occasionally - accidentally - let his mask slip to show that it had, in fact, upset him. Ed reckons it's because all his life Stede has been belittled, and so to him it's the norm, it's familiar, like an aching joint that never seems to get better. To Stede that's just how it's supposed to be. It is what it is. But no more. Stede is free! And Ed is going to comfort his best friend so hard and show him just how special he is until he inevitably falls in love with Ed– That's a solid plan… right?

wip wednesday part 2: the soap opera thing
“You’ve got a meeting with Netflix on Monday,” Izzy replies, clearly quite satisfied with himself, like he hasn’t just lodged a big fucking lump of dread right in the middle of Ed’s gut. “Sent ‘em the loglines we whittled down and they were excited about a few; plus, they were big fans of Dead Set. Think if we could get Archie in on something, it’d be an even easier sell.” All Ed’s desire to do his job promptly flees the room, now that there’s real work to do. “I dunno, man; she’s not really doing TV anymore,” he says, grabbing a little hunk of raw amethyst from its perch on his desk, next to a bunch of his other trinkets and bullshit, and running his thumb over one of its smooth sides. “She’s doing the stand-up thing.” Izzy scoffs like it’s the stupidest thing he’s ever heard, and Ed would probably have agreed at one point; after all, stand-up comedy is, more often than not, a fucking trainwreck of a medium, and they both know damn well that the money’s practically non-existent for most people, save for a lucky (or maybe just persistent) few. “That’s not a real fuckin’ job,” Izzy argues, leaning back in his chair. “Yeah, well, it’s what she’s into right now,” he says, not especially interested in having to try and defend the genre. “Must be working okay; I don’t think she’s had an acting gig in, like, the better part of a year. Think she’s even got a tour coming up.”
