Here is Day 10 of #October, where I've been drawing an octopus every day as an exercise in drawing something that isn't humanoid, or even a vertebrate, to improve my own understanding of drawing. Today I tried out a new hatching style, something I think adds an organic, handmade texture to my inks.

I'm very proud of this one, in part because it forces me to really think about this movie and what it's doing (and because I also cover the other two dubs it's had because I am a maniac who makes questionable life choices

A giant Moody Blues introduction Playlist I put together a few years ago, based off of a 2 CD Moodies compilation I made for myself in graduate school. Listen in order, I put a lot of thought into the sequencing.

For the longest time I wondered why the comic font Whizbang has such an intense italic slant. Way more than most italic variants. Then I realized that it was a near-exact match for John Costanza's lettering and he just did that. Lol at how strong that shear is!

SHELVED BY GENRE has completed the second half of THE SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING, in which Alan Moore & Co expand the character's mythology, making some truly baffling and ill-advised choices but also giving us some of the coolest-looking Swamp Things ever put on paper. rangedtouch.com/2025/10/10/s...

-> But the more ambitious later episodes did work for more eventually, especially when Kister found ways to make their limited locations and green screens work better in their pre-existing visual style. Worth checking out, just don't watch it after 10 PM like a dummy like I did

#155. The Mandela Catalogue (2021-now)
One of the ur-analog horror series, according to the internet, and one quite enjoyed watching! I think I preferred the more low-budget episodes from earlier on, especially the ones that use a cheap Bible cartoon as their base ->

This feels a little underwhelming for an issue with a 200 on the cover, but I suppose that's just how Legends of the Dark Knight Rolled. It is at least a nice time piece from that brief era where Eddie Campbell of all people was writing cape stuff

#154. "Gotham Emergency" by Eddie Campbell, Daren White, Bart Sears, Bart Sears, Michael Atiyeh, & Pat Brosseau [from Legends of the Dark Knight #200]
A pretty good thriller about an ER team trying to save The Joker before he dies and leaves a bunch of Gotham to blow up

I really liked Joe Staton's art in this, he draws a fantastic Joker, near Roger Marshall levels of good, and it's nice little time capsule of who Joker stories were written before Harley Quinn existed in the comics. Well worth your time

#153. Batman: Going Sane by J. M. DeMatteis, Joe Staton, Steve Mitchell, Digital Chameleon, & Willie Schubert
Very nice story about the contrasting psychology of Batman and the Joker, what drives them, and the ways that they feed off each other as enemies and figures

Rousseau's art is the main highlight, although the story, about how much Batman's extended crew cares about him, is sweet in it's own way

#152. "The Mourning After" by Jason Hall, Craig Rousseau, Dan Davis, Lee Loughridge, & Janice Chiang [from Detective Comics #782]
A nice, if maybe a little slight, story about a janitor trying to figure out who keeps leaving roses in Crime Alley every year.

I'm not sure if the villain in this one every showed up again, but he's great here. An interesting look at an egomaniac getting caught up in something that's really beyond what he can actually handle

#151. "Dead Reckoning" by Ed Brubaker, Tommy Castillo, Wade von Grawbadger, Jason Wright, Wildstorm FX, Todd Klein
Someone is picking off supervillains in Gotham and Batman has to stop him! This is a Brubaker joint, so you know it's gonna be hard hitting and well paced. Castillo's art rocks too

#150. "Gottismburgh" by Jon Lewis, Stefano Gaudiano, Carla Feeny, & Janice Chiang [from Detective Comics #781]
One-off back-up strip about a medieval forest that's protected by a Robin Hood-esque Batman and his band of Robins. Perfectly fine, if maybe a little too short for the concept

#149. "Batman: Spore" by J. C. Gagne & Michel Gagné [from Detective Comics #776-780]
Wonderfully bizarre little back-up strip about Batman being taken over by an alien spore and growing into a big plant monster. Apparently this has a dodgy reputation, but I thought it was a fun ride
