Simply to say the words “I stand with Palestine Action” is now an offence. If I were to say those words, I could be sent to jail. So could you, writes Ronan Bennett.

Did Meta deploy Russian technology and tactics to monitor and track activities of billions? Especially in current circumstances it would be very concerning. This must be investigated and explained in full transparency. It’s 2025.

This from @rachelgriffin.bsky.social looks great on DSA “systemic risks.” I 💯 agree that this framing depoliticizes (or just hides) distributive/ideological conflicts.
I take from that a fear of govt. Who will call the shots at the Commission? She fears platform capture. Porque no los dos, I guess…

For a long time, the “bargain” companies claimed to offer was some surveillance in return for “relevant ads,” ostensibly free platforms, & algorithmic suggestions.

The next “bargain” is all-consuming surveillance in return for a system they claim will know you, interpret your world & direct you.

Online surveillance is justified by a narrative that it helps to ‘optimise’ ie rationalise advertising. Aside from the law & ethics of that, it can’t even be possible if the metrics are made up by platforms, as also discussed in Subprime Attention Crisis by @timhwang.bsky.social
