It’s important to keep learning how to be a good public speaker, but if you’re a comment-not-a-question guy, please learn to be a good audience member. Why would you bother attending a thing if you’re going to 1. Sleep or 2. Attack the speaker’s credibility and then refuse to accept her answers.

Consider that most of the investment is not in current usage, but as of now theoretical products which will require exponentially more electricity once they have a user base. In order for the $1.2T of investment not to evaporate overnight, they have to build new data centers and for each of them.

So when I hear of students being encouraged to use GPT in college I don’t hear innovation. I hear cognitive atrophy, the inability to think critically for oneself, and total dependence on vulnerable centralized repositories of data for knowledge without ever understanding how knowledge is generated.

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

One of the earlier and most-viewed examples was an animation of Al Shifa Hospital, published in October 2023.
