I refuse to use "DNA" when discussing a company. Businesses can't have DNA. Not only does the term humanize corporations that don't deserve it, but using it implies there are features that can't be changed for any reason.

And we've all seen every large corporation change directions HARD lately.

It's been long enough to officially conclude that I don't care for Affinity Studio's all-in-one environment. I get the appeal, but it doesn't make things any easier to work with. I just spend too much time wondering which mode I should be in.

ChatGPT launched three years ago. Now the web is filling with slop.
We can rewild it, but we'll need to get creative...

Today I’m launching The Human-Made Project, a simple and decentralized way to label creative works as being made by a human, not by AI. thehumanmade.org

This is wild. I've been dreaming of a world where NPCs don't all follow the same rigid animation when dancing or celebrating a victory or just existing in an environment, and this is a huge step in that direction.
Gave penguins timing-sensitive motor planning capabilities. In other words, they can try to move a body part to a specific place *at a specific time*. This is vital for NPCs with a sense of rhythm or good reflexes!

The first thing I do when I open a job description is search for "AI," and imagine how quickly my instinctive disappointment with seeing it highlighted here evolved into excitement for what looks like a perfectly parallel reflection on garbage technology.

After an entire year of research, writing, rewriting, animation, rendering, and a heck of a lot of love, the longest video I've ever made titled "How to do anything (without AI)" is just about done. You'll get to see it very soon, but I'm just too excited, so here's the first 30 seconds:

UX writing matters. The first message implies the user did something wrong, and only tech-savvy people would understand what the following sentence means, or how it's tied to the reason for the issue.

It could at least prompt the user to refresh and try again. This message feels very final.

People who use reusable straws: do you have a material preference? Metal? Glass? Bamboo? Something else?

I've been reusing the same handful of plastic straws for years, and I might want to upgrade someday. I feel like glass would be cool, but my soft utensil pouch might not protect them.

People shouldn't have to wait in a boring line to vote. Every voting station should be an indoor community space with activities and refreshments. Once you're in, you're guaranteed your vote, so grab a slice of pie, find a comfy chair or a pinball machine and hang out while you wait for your turn.

One of the weirdest online arguments I got into was with the owner of a local restaurant I'd never been to, who didn't follow me, but found a tweet I'd made saying that the UX of DVDs was worse than downloaded videos, which just played with no issue. They insisted that I was promoting piracy.
Far and away the weirdest online dispute I got into was with someone who strongly disagreed with my belief that there will never be time travel because we haven’t heard of anyone doing it. If it became possible it would become so common that we would have experienced them already.
One of the weirdest online arguments I had was with a hardline Israeli right winger who insisted modern Egyptians were not descended from the ancient Egyptians because the Arabs had genocided the whole population after conquest for being pagans

Today was pretty great, for a couple reasons. I finally went to a tech event that I really cared about (because it wasn't about the tech part, but the people it's meant to help), and I had pizza for the first time since that dentist appointment.

Also the pizza was free.

Wonderful day.

I want to use my UX chops to sincerely help people. I'd love to work with a non-profit or government agency to improve accessibility, communication, or any system that the general public interacts with. There's so much I see that needs to be fixed. I wish I knew how to make that happen.
