“Private property…has led Individualism entirely astray. It has made gain not growth its aim. So that man thought that the important thing was to have, and did not know that the important thing is to be. The true perfection of man lies, not in what man has, but in what man is.”

Are we still doing diner journalism? Because today at a greasy spoon in Stateline, Nevada, a 65 year old birder named Maryanne told me that she likes that “Mamdonnelly” fellow and thinks that Donald Trump is a pedophile.

She’s talking about writing and journalism specifically here, but it’s sadly applicable to a *lot* of other professions as well. 🧵
If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.
And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.

It is a shame that Brazil’s judges are so activist that none of them stepped in to change the laws for Jair Bolsonaro.

We don’t need to reform ICE.
We don’t need alternatives to ICE.
We don’t need to engage in dishonest debates wondering what the U.S. would do without ICE.

ICE isn’t even 23 years old. Most adults know a world without ICE. And the billions used to fund ICE can be used to meet people’s basic needs.

I promise I’m not writing a think piece but it’s wild to see Olivia Nuzzi get one million second chances from legacy pubs and a prestigious staff job after violating basic journalistic ethics multiple times while so many talented journalists I know who did not sleep with sources are out of work

1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.

I'm going insane because people constantly recommend using AI for things and it is always, ALWAYS worse than repeatedly bashing my head on a brick.

It's like you have an actual problem & all anyone recommends is "have you tried talking to my cousin? He drinks bleach & doesn't wash his pants"

It bears repeating: the fact that a clown car happens to be moving very fast doesn’t change the fact that it’s still full of clowns.

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

Donald Trump is our nation's biggest mark but Dem leadership is so inept and fundamentally unpersuasive that they've lost a charisma contest to Steven Miller for ten years

THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

Look, men aren’t worried about being falsely accused of rape. False rape allegations occur at roughly the same frequency as false allegations of murder/etc., and they seem real not worried about those, even though they also wreck your reputation.

They’re worried about what they *have* done.

“Andrew, what regrets do you have in life?”

“Never having anything funny or clever to say to scam callers.”
Just panicked a scam caller. Answered the phone with "Communications Securities System. Investigation division. State your full name, affiliation, and date of birth to begin processing. This call is being recorded."

All I heard was "ohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuck" before they hung up.

It's a good day.

A racist changing is not dependent upon having contact with the people they have harmed. It is not dependent on forgiveness from the people they have harmed. It is not on black people to put themselves in harm's way so a bigot can practice being a decent human being. To expect that is highly unfair.
