part of what got south korea out under the thumb of authoritarian dictatorships and to real elections (1987) and free and fair ones (1992) were large, mass protests and demonstrations.

which is such an anodyne way of describing what happened. it makes it sound bloodless.

my country elected a fascist 10 years ago and he's now arguably the most unpopular pm we've ever had and we still can't get rid of him because once a fascist gets into power, typically you do not get them out without a whole lot of mass violence. Don't be like us.

With SCOTUS set to legalize conversion therapy, I think it's important for states to get around this decision by implementing new legislation applying private rights of action to practitioners of conversion therapy by their victims with large damages and long statutes of limitations.

honestly, i don't know which version of the song i like better. cash's is wonderfully stripped down to the basics, but reznor's is so powerful because of how the backing instrumentals just add to the, i dunno, disconcerting sense of it all?

should the court try and limit a theoretical future liberal president's powers in contradiction to what they've allowed, one thinks it would utterly justify packing the court and perhaps impeaching some of the current justices

but this also assumes the democrats won't be locked out of power

This is why I think the next Democratic president needs to use the EXACT tools that SCOTUS has handed Trump. Don't leave room for any distinctions.

Impound funds for deportation. Give ICE the USAID treatment. Refuse to collect government-backed debt. Purge MAGA loyalists from the executive branch.

Could the Supreme Court still apply different rules to a Democratic president? Of course. You don't need to remind me of that. But a lightning-fast blitz that repurposes Trump's new powers for good stands the best chance of standing up in court. Democrats need to start thinking about this right now.

The best "defense" of SCOTUS' hypocrisy is that there's an asymmetry between how Democrats and Republicans wield executive power. Broadly—Dems want to give things (health care, asylum, foreign aid, loan relief, civil rights) while Republicans want to take things away. SCOTUS makes the latter easier.
