I’ve just felt uneasy this week about media coverage—some coverage of us is good, to give levity and hope, but I want the focus to remain where the most harm is being done (Chicago).

This is not to say that bad things are not happening—and I do want to note the incredible work PIRC (Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition) has been doing keeping people safe.

Noem also seems determined to fulfill the fantasy of war torn Portland, so we’ll see what happens in the near future.

I do think the tactics of absurdism, as the Portland Chicken pointed out, should be replicated everywhere possible. But the ICE presence in Portland proper is still very small compared to Chicago and California. We can be silly because we have the time, space, and privilege to do so.

While I praise what Portland protesters are doing, I think it’s important to point out that we are not dealing with even a fraction of what Chicago is dealing with. There are probably many reasons for that, most tied to white supremacy, but: the two should not be compared.

The deportation order is based on Vedam’s conviction for murder—a crime he did not actually commit and for which he’s now been wholly exonerated. He entered the US at 9 months old and was a legal permanent resident before his conviction. We are so, so, so far from the light of justice.

Having attended protests in PDX, I have to admit I’ve been nervous: there is definitely a type of (white, male) protestor here who is only ever looking to fuck things up in the name of anarchy. The kind of guy to play right into their hands.

I know that facts don’t matter anymore, but it still hurts my brain that conservatives can look at that video of Kristi Noem on top of the ICE building in Portland, the city looking fuckin’ beautiful, all of ten protestors on the ground, and be like “get ‘em!!” & “thank you for saving us” (sincere)
