The only problem with Mary Stephen's terrific new film Palimpsest: The Story of a Name is that it's playing only once rather than getting an official release, which it deserves, since it's far superior than much that gets released.

I was moved to tears attending this special Yom Kippur service last night with my daughter. We tore cloth to express our grief+anger in the face of overwhelming death. We placed stones to say we are here, we will not forget, we will act. We refuse to be silent. These are the traditions we pass down.

Countless pieces of torn white cloth are tied to the marble pillars at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The ancient practice of tearing clothes is a tangible expression of grief and anger in the face of death.

A child and her parent each hold small stones in their hands. A funeral tradition to bind the memory of the dead through the presence of the living.

NYC councilors banned solitary confinement. Eric Adams issued an executive order declaring an emergency to get away with telling Rikers to disobey the law. And he's been reissuing orders weekly, as they've been expiring!
