It's that time of year again. I'm trying not to use Amazon, and I've deleted my meta accounts, so my reach is limited. But any help getting some books for my amazing fourth graders, some of whom I also had in kindergarten, is appreciated.

@prisonculture.bsky.social will you repost please? 💙
It's almost time for a new year. If you would like to help buy books for my students (fabulous fourth graders), you can use this link. Thank you! You'll also be supporting my favorite books store @spokeandwordbooks.bsky.social #BookSky #EduSky

These are great. Even after 20+ years, there are things for me to learn, or relearn. I have a student teacher right now, and I'm going to share this with her as well.

Thousands of protesters marched to Portland's ICE building Saturday.

Demonstrators were met with large clouds of tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bangs shortly after their arrival.

(hint for teachers: using AI to give feedback is the ultimate hint that you don't care about what you're reading and that is a lesson that student writers carry with them beyond your classroom so please don't do that)

I hate it here.

Seeing people holding those signs made me sick to my stomach.

I've called my rep and was told she has been getting a lot of calls encouraging a no vote. I hope she follows through.
So the House is going to vote TOMORROW on the DHS funding bill that includes funding for ICE.

There's a real chance we can get Dems to vote NO on any bill with ICE funding to sink it.

Once it goes to the Senate we likely lose this chance.

24 hours. Go.

Good for her! I hope she has some wonderful garden summers ahead of her.

Not a state park, but Timothy Lake is my favorite spot.

No thank you.

This was one of my faves this year, and it's always on a student's desk in my classroom. It's popular!

I'm not Gen Z, but the first question I asked my partner when I messaged him in early 2017 was what his opinion about the election outcome. He responded appropriately.

Everyone has a list of so-called "red flags" when they're dating. And for some, especially younger Americans, different political views is a relationship deal breaker.

Ranch or bbq sauce. Or if they are seasoned perfectly, nothing.

Ugh. I (kind of) get being disappointed with third. But I am the furthest thing from competitive athlete status. I seriously doubt extra weight was the reason she placed third.

On the first Saturday of winter break, I'm sitting on the couch, drinking a martini, listening to Dire Straits on vinyl, and looking at the Christmas tree. It's a special kind of perfect.

That is a good man. I have gotten off the couch, but I do not plan to get dressed in real clothes or leave.

I hate perfect attendance incentives. Hate. My school was doing something schoolwide when there were a certain number of days with overall attendance at 90% or 95%. Either it's not happening this year, or we haven't done it. It's a new leadership year.

I searched for something recently, and multiple sites with generic to ridiculous names had the exact same content. Word for word.

I only remember Romeo and Juliet from freshman year, which would have been 1990-1991. If we did another one, I have forgotten. I think one or two feels right since there is so much other good writing out there.

I don't know that I'd put it quite that way, but I'm thankful that, thus far, my legs have also stayed attached.

I took an asynchronous class about 10 years ago, and I hated it. I was nerding out and really thinking through stuff, and most people just responded with a few sentences. Then the instructor was all, "A's for everyone!"

I did all the extra credit and got graded on a curve. (thanks Taylor)

I'm taking an every-other-week in-person/asynchronous class. It's a nice blend. I ruminate and rabbit hole in between in person meetings, but then get to talk about it.

Over the last 20 years, we have gotten a comp day on the Friday of conference for two evenings of conferences. This year, our comp day was today…3 weeks later. I’m enjoying a 4 day weekend, but I would have preferred that Friday off. Conference week was exhausting!
