Creating a military conflict with Venezuela gives this administration a legal "hook" to invoke the Alien Enemies Act. In other words, the foreign war is being manufactured in order to facilitate court deference for its domestic mass deportation policy. It's a Stephen Miller Special.

There is One Simple Trick for JB Pritzker and Kathy Hochul to punish Columbia and Northwestern:

Since both schools have committed to end academic freedom, their land is no longer used for education.

Revoke their property tax exemptions and redistribute millions to public schools like CUNY or UIC.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Faculty at a Big 10 school with a prominent athletic program here: my retirement (that I signed a contract for) was cut 10% this year. I also have to clean my office with a broken, donated vacuum. But this is nice too, I guess.

Psychopomp is one of the best publishing teams on the planet and I love being a part of it.

They consistently put out amazing work. But most of all, they are such good people.

Please support The Deadlands if you're able. We can't lose another. ❤️❤️

my biggest academic pet peeve is when edited anthologies use Latino literature when they actually mean Chicano. if you want to only talk about Chicanos/Mexican influence in the US fine but then just say that!! otherwise you're just going to waste my time and also piss me off

From Evan: it's a huge night of hope for the trans community. The Republicans went all in on anti-trans ads in multiple races and so far there's no sign it got them anything.

Perhaps the page can be turned on blaming us for Harris' loss last year.

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

whatever you think of Spanberger, the fact that her opponent ran a campaign based almost entirely on transphobia and is on track to eat shit in the biggest blowout the state has seen since 2009 is unambiguously a huge win
Earle-Sears ran what felt like 12 billion ads about how much she hated trans kids and I didn’t hear a single pundit say she should stick to real issues that affect real people.
