Basically every health care CEO looks like this, btw
oh no I googled "dick merkin" and it's even worse than I imagined: a healthcare ceo who looks like my sleep paralysis demon

Bro hit the 360 no scope of hypocrisy
this is not a new sentiment, but firing your top reporter over "strategic disagreements" about politics a day after defending ezra kleins right to spread zionist propaganda because you dislike deplatforming really takes the cake

She actually has the chance to do the funniest thing ever and hire everyone jeff just cut to launch a pilot for this
And this is why I said it'd be even better if MacKenzie started giving money to local news orgs
Every time there is a mass layoff I hope people remember that newsletters cannot save us. The Free Press started as a newsletter but came to influence as something more like a newspaper (without the journalism).

We need to somehow invest in media infrastructure, not a thousand little ladders.

If hospital executives start adding potential multi-million dollar settlements into their financial calculus for gender-affirming care, we will see a lot more hospitals end these services.

2026 Feb 3: In a chilling development reminiscent of UK's Keira Bell case, NY jury returns first-of-its-kind $2m verdict against psychologist & surgeon who provided top-surgery to 15 y/o in 2019. She detransitioned and - now 22 y/o - blames them.

ohhh ‘democracy dies in darkness’ was aspirational

Everybody has it backwards.

Billionaires aren’t buying up these institutions to make money. They’re buying them to kill them. Same as the oligarchs destroying government and social programs and things like weather forecasting and regulatory bodies.

They’re creating a world they control completely

It's the same story every time. Rich people ruin everything, including our lives.

After I burned out in NYC, I thought about it. But i was dealing with health issues and living back with my parents, so i needed something that would actually cover my health insurance and rent somewhere
this is the reason i left too. maybe a few hundred people would pay for a newsletter about niche music, but that’s an enormous amount of work for not enough money to pay my bills. kudos to those who do it regardless but personally i could not
sooo many people told me to start a newsletter after my last staff journo job but it is not that easy and wouldn't pay my rent! i *loved* writing about television/culture but the only way to consistently pay my rent was to take a job in a different industry.

Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already.

Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long?

Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)

"Reforms" to ICE, like requiring judicial warrants for arrests, are not enough. This administration has made it clear that they have no intention of abiding by the law. Anything short of stripping funding from this tyrannical agency is failure by Congress.

Worth noting as well that the knowledge and tactics taught at the trainings have, by this point, pretty deeply permeated among the broader public.

To some extent, wherever you go, most random passersby know what to do. People carry whistles with them, a big response can materialize out of nowhere.
A manager for the Immigrant Defense Network told MPR News that back in November, 2,500 people were trained as constitutional observers. Now, the total is nearly 30,000 trained observers in 77 of Minnesota's 87 counties.
