I think it's so popular because the books were HEAVILY pushed in school libraries, both in Japanese and English. Plus the messages about finding a sense of self and it being ok to be different (HAHAHA coming from JKR, lmaooo) are harder to find in media here, or at least used to be.

I've found my brain to be weirdly flexible in its ability to think in both languages concurrently, but I've also found that I often "talk to myself" (externalizing) in Japanese. However, I DON'T "talk to myself" (as in DID inter-system talking) in Japanese, because not everybody knows it.
