I possibly cemented an already eccentric reputation at work when discovery of an (adult and sizeable) prairie rattler sitting just off a very busy path in a building we were working in caused an outburst of "AWWWWWWWW LOOKA THA NOPEROPE".

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.

As soon as the applause for the young and self-righteous dies down I'm sure mine'll start.

Seriously bro, most people are going to flat laugh at you when you labor under the illusion that life is debate club and random strangers are obligated to participate when you march up and throw the gauntlet.

No, I didn't because I've spent decades thinking through my relationship with animals, the natural world, meat, food in general, and agriculture, and the logical trap you appear to think you have me in is hilarious and adorable.

I went through this probably longer ago than you've been alive.

....oh buddy have YOU got absolutely the wrong target here. Yes, I'm well aware domestic cats will eat a human corpse, sometimes before it's cooled. Have been for thirty years. Have butchered my own meat, before IT was fully cooled.

Right now you are reminding me of me when I was thirteen.

I grew up with a pet pig.

1) I knew that creature was intelligent enough to understand that I was too.

2) I also knew it was *thinking* about what to do with me.

I feel ZERO guilt about eating pork. I'm all for humane farming and slaughter, but eating them at all? I'm just first.

i have met a number of pigs, including pigs i later went on to eat (we have small farmers in our family) and quite frankly, getting to know pigs has made me feel even less bad about eating them

they would 100% eat us if given the chance

Oh it's not high opinion of THEM at all, just a belief that banal, self-deluding evil is much more common than outright psychopathy.

Even very practiced liars have a harder time with lies about things they can't delude or rationalize themselves into believing.

Honestly I think it's a psychological tic. Even when you're otherwise totally amoral and have made the active choice that you have no duty to America, only Trump or tribe, it's a rare person indeed that doesn't think using captive children for sex is Wrong.

On some level, they choke on the lie.

The inability of the media establishment to deal with being straight-up lied to is a major contributing factor for this mess.

You can just say that the city of Portland is not burning to the ground, Axios. It's a simple, incontrovertible fact.

Excerpt from an Axios story:

Trump told reporters earlier on Sunday that troop deployments were needed because "Portland is burning to the ground," a claim local officials reject.

A traveler from an antique land--great guy--said to me with tears in his eyes "Sir, two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert." And I said wow, that's really something. But we'll be building a big beautiful statue to my hubris and it will stand for eternity

I can imagine not being that far gone failing to remember the title of a ghostwritten book; that's never been a secret.

... what I can't imagine is the combination of stupidity and shamelessness required to brag about prognosticating Osama Bin Laden being a bad guy in 2000.

I'm fascinated by how "Tokyo Rose Barbie" has become a legitimate, definable career niche for soulless young women in televised news.

Also the discourse here sometimes makes me want to grab people and say, "you know, in the old days we sometimes processed feelings privately, without shouting them to the world. It has a certain appeal, you should try it."

Having Los Alamos, Nevada Test Site, Sandia, and most of the uranium mines does make for a fairly convincing "do not touch", though.

Also coyotes are far more omnivorous than commonly believed and absolutely *will* gorge on fruit, especially during drought. Could easily be that as well. Hell, they'll even gorge on pinyon nuts.

Certainly could be a black bear cub, but with the hand for scale I'd actually put my money down on raccoon. I've seen a *lot* of bear shit up here and it's generally a far more impressive pile. And the poster who noted anyone's poop looks like that after enough fruit is spot on.

an easier way to address this question for me is to say that Oh Brother Where Art Thou is the champ of the OST that punches above its weight category

Best movie soundtrack?

For me, "Boogie Nights"

You?
