My playlist for songs to sing along with is titled “Sing With Your Diaphragm”. In addition to the decline in church interaction contributing to this, we should also point out the cuts to arts education. We don’t have music classes in schools and after school programs any more.
Hardly any of the new singers use their diaphragm and it speaks directly to how the lack of influence from the church has caused a decline in musical prowess.
SZA sounds like she sings with her mouth closed. Summer sounds like Fischer Price my first chorus class. Most of the men are nasally/whiny. If their voices are nice the songs are boring or poorly produced.
Occasionally I’ll find things I like but the vast majority is a no thank you.

When Amber Riley was doing Dreamgirls in London (she won an Olivier award, which is like a British Tony) we were talking after the show and I was like you don't sing the same way as you used to and she said I have to sing and I am telling you 8 times a week. I sing to preserve my voice now.
Jojo kind of talks about this fairly often. Because she wasn't classically trained, she was killing her throat, especially as her voice changed. It wasn't until she did theater and was taught to preserve her throat did she truly step into all she could do.
You’re going to see a lot of the new singers having throat surgery or getting polyps from straining their voice to achieve that sound ProTools made them appear to be.
