One of the stories that makes me the saddest out of this ICE invasion is one out of the Minnesota Star Tribune today about ICE agents eating at a little Mexican restaurant in the small town of Willmar, Minn, —and then, when they were done, arresting some of the workers.

Non-protesting dad just trying to hustle his kids, as young as 6mo, out of the neighborhood. ICE threw a flash-bang INTO HIS car, all 6 kids in the hospital now.

If anyone wondered how things turn against occupying armies there's a case study playing out in front of you.

There is something all of us can do to rein in ICE's reign of terror. The Department of Homeland Security is currently funded only through January 30, and the new funding bill is vulnerable.

This seems like a maliciously put headline to make people feel a certain way.

Wikipedia is not partaking in generative AI. They are making AI companies and scrappers having to pay for training their modules off wikipedia texts. And having an AI (not that ai) tasked with updating dead links.

"Women are overmentored and underchampioned." This IG post sums up pretty well a subject I think a lot about, but it's the caption that has the question I need to ask myself about more things: "Has this...increased your surface area for opportunity and luck, or just your capacity to endure waiting?"

A friend of mine told me how much he took to THE CHAIR COMPANY because he finds the main character's emotional journey really relatable to some of the things he's been going through himself, and having now seen most of the season, I feel like I should be very concerned.

Newspaper strip-wise, I was a Bloom County kid. My sister bought me a collection with Opus on the cover, assuming it must be a comic for kids, and instead it's how I learned to reference figures in '80s American politics, and to sympathize with a scoundrel (Steve Dallas, of course).

Severely disappointed not to be in town to attend these shows in-person as GLTS is always ridiculously funny, and I hope they can somehow convince Jared Harris to take a turn as Steven Charleston.
LA! Tuesday! Check out these great lineups. Both are moving quickly, early show is almost sold out!

also live-streaming!

BREAKING

Fed Chair Jerome Powell says he’s under federal investigation.

The Fed chair says subpoenas and the threat of criminal charges are retaliation for refusing to set interest rates according to the president’s wishes.

This is not hyperbole. Ensuring that your information ecosystem produces and communicates reliable information is exactly as important as sufficient military spending, a sound financial system and a robust production and trade base. A government that neglects it, as Carney is doing, courts disaster.

My debut feature is on Tubi, and if I were smart, I'd figure out a way to drive traffic over there to try and get a zero or two added to the $5-50 revshare cheques I get every quarter, but it's not go-viral embarrassing, just regular-embarrassing in ways a filmmaker still figuring it out can be.

Tom Cherones was NEWSRADIO's main director for the final 3 seasons after coming in for a couple of eps in S2. If I'm recalling correctly from DVD commentaries, the actors noted previous directors were too restrictive w/ their blocking & felt more at ease when he came in.

To see T.K. Carter in a starring role, watch his remarkable turn in THE CORNER, the HBO miniseries about a family living in poverty in a Baltimore neighbourhood overrun with drugs. It can be a tough watch, but well worth it.
We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of T. K. Carter, beloved by genre fans for his role as Nauls in John Carpenter’s 1982 classic THE THING.

An anecdote I enjoy telling because the actor is a pal. When he got to set, a lens in his glasses had gone missing. I spoke to the on-set prop super about the repair time, suggesting we could do this one scene without. She said, "He's too hot not to be wearing them! Isn't his character nerdy?"
I’m not suggesting a conspiracy. Or even that people who wear glasses need to see themselves represented on screen

I just think the absence of anyone in contemporary TV and movies wearing glasses is **weird** considering 2/3 of the population needs corrected vision!

This week's newsletter
Why does nobody wear glasses on screen anymore?
People who wear glasses are everywhere in real life. So why isn’t that true on screen?
